After a successful competition last year, the Cubing Club has another competition on March 30, 2025 held at the Aliso Niguel High School main gym.
Cubing Club was founded by Arav Mody (11) in 2022 and since then, many have joined. The new members range from students who have prior experience, eager to push their solving times to its limits, and students who are complete beginners, simply wanting to learn how to solve the cube for the first time.
Last year, the first ANHS cubing competition was held, hosting over 100 competitors. To continue expanding the cubing community, this year’s competition will host over 200 competitors who will compete in various categories such as the 3×3, 2×2 and 4×4. To incentivize new cubers to become engaged, over 80 spots are being reserved for beginners in the competition, enabling more people to experience the fun and the adrenaline of being in a cubing competition.
This year, ANHS Cubing Club is partnering with West Coast Cubing, WCA and Speed Cube Shops. With help from experienced cubers in the community and these organizations, the club hopes to bring in many competitors in Orange County and give members a taste of the real cubing tournament experience.
Beyond partnering with official cube associations, they are also partnering with Ethans Ohana. Ethans Ohana is an organization that supports kids with cancer through cubing. Not only will competitors have a chance to become closer to the cubing community, but they will also have the privilege of competing for a great cause.
Ethans Ohana donates cubes to facilitate their mission statement of fighting against cancer. The Cubing Club hopes to contribute to this cause and will be donating. They will also be open for donations and will take anything as it will greatly contribute to the cause.
Arav Mody shares that “being able to use cubing to facilitate efforts in improving the lives of pediatric patients is impactful and is something Cubing Club is excited to be part of.”
The competition will also be free to watch, inviting more students and families to witness the excitement firsthand. By doing so, the community will be able to grow larger, enabling even more newcomers to have a chance in becoming part of the community.
Oliver Luu (11) highlights the growing cubing community as he says, “The competition aims to provide for the high demand for cubing competitions in Orange County and also helps to engage ANHS students with the cubing community in Southern California.”
The Cubing Club’s second year promises seem to be even more exciting than the first. Whether students are looking to break records, improve their cognitive skills or use cubing as a means to help others, it is a place for everyone to be involved in a great community.
