The Aliso Niguel boys’ basketball team wrapped up their league season on a competitive note, closing their league campaign with a hard-fought battle against Capistrano Valley High School on Jan. 30.
The rivalry between the two teams was intense, as their previous matchup had been a back-and-forth trade-off filled with tense moments. This latest game had even more significance, with the potential to determine who would claim the coveted title of League Champion.
From the tip-off, both teams came out with intensity, knowing how much was at stake. Aliso Niguel, led by their talented underclassmen players, played with determination and energy, staying within striking distance throughout the game.
Though they came close to taking the lead on several occasions, Capistrano Valley managed to hold their ground and ultimately secure the 48-41 victory. The loss was a tough pill to swallow for Aliso, but it didn’t overshadow their solid performance in league play, where they finished second with a 5-3 record in the league.
This season’s league games highlighted the team’s resilience and skill throughout the season, despite facing some tough competition. Aliso Niguel demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level, but ultimately, the Capistrano Valley victory clinched the league championship title for the Cougars, leaving the Wolverines with second place.
The team’s performance in these games showcased their potential and solidified their place as one of the top teams in the league.
Likish Velineni (12) states, “We played well this season, although we did not win league, it was a good run.”
Despite the league season coming to an end, the Wolverines still had one more game to play, this time it took place against Trabuco Hills High School on February 3. Unfortunately, the outcome was not in Aliso’s favor, as they suffered a 59-41 loss. This defeat left the Wolverines’ overall record at 19-9, a solid mark for the season but one that also highlighted the challenges they faced when matching up against some of the league’s best teams.
Although the team’s regular season ended with mixed results, there was a sense of optimism and pride in the way they had played. Their second-place finish in league, coupled with their 19-9 record, spoke to their ability to compete at a high level throughout the season.
With the league season behind them, the team now sets its sights on the postseason, where they will look to continue their strong play and abilities so that they can build on the foundation they’ve established.
The Aliso Niguel boys’ basketball team may have come up just short in their quest for the league title, but their resilience and talent make them a challenging opponent as they head into CIF competition.
Isaiah Shin (12) states, “ We ended the season in not the way we hoped to, but we are ready for our first game in CIF.
The team will undoubtedly look to build on their season’s successes and push forward with the hope of achieving their ultimate goal: a CIF championship.
