For students and teachers at Aliso Niguel, an extended four-day weekend is just around the corner, offering a much-needed break from homework, extracurriculars, and the daily grind of classes.
With school closed on both Friday and Monday, students and staff have exciting plans to take advantage of their time off. Whether it’s heading out on a short vacation, fixing their sleep schedule, or preparing for upcoming school events, everyone has something to look forward to.
The four-day weekend comes as a result of Presidents’ Day, a national holiday honoring former presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Schools and many businesses close in observance of the holiday, giving students and families a chance to reflect on the nation’s history while also enjoying a well-deserved break.
The two extra days off provide students with the opportunity to unwind, spend time with loved ones, or even take a short vacation, making it one of the most anticipated long weekends of the school year.
Ananya Kota (10) says, “I plan to hang out with my cat, sleep, and study; my brother is visiting from college and I’m looking forward to spending time with him as well.”
The majority of students, like Kota, are not taking breaks from academics, and getting ahead on schoolwork. There are some students who are taking advantage of the extended weekend by using the extra time to catch up or get ahead on their studies. AP and Honors students, in particular, see this as an opportunity to prepare for upcoming exams.
However, a lot of students are not mainly focused on their studies, but taking the break as a chance to relax. Students are eager to spend time with their friends; the long weekend is a prime opportunity for socializing.
Lily Hartlaub (10) says, “I’m going to Hawaii with my family; it’s the perfect chance to take a break from school, enjoy the beach, and hopefully get away from cold weather.”
Many students, like Hartlaub, plan to take advantage of the time by traveling. Whether they travel outside the city, state, or country, they hope to have an exciting weekend.
Additionally, for those with part-time jobs, the extended weekend means extra shifts and more earnings. A diverse group of students are vaulting the break, focusing on work and saving money for college, personal expenses, or future trips.
Mrs. Rodriguez, the front office lady, shares, “If it’s not raining, I plan to take my family to Knott’s Berry Farm. I’m also looking forward to the Boysenberry Festival coming up.”
Staff members like Mrs. Rodriguez cherish family time and are taking the opportunity of the four-day weekend to spend multiple days at theme parks while enjoying quality time with relatives. Theme parks like Knott’s Berry Farm provide both thrilling attractions and seasonal events, making them an ideal getaway for families.
Whether students and teachers are traveling, resting, studying, or giving back to the community, one thing is clear: the four-day weekend is a welcome break for everyone at Aliso Niguel High School. With so many different ways to spend the time off, the halls will surely be overwhelmed with stories when students return on Tuesday.
