The Aliso Niguel boys’ basketball team opened their league play with a thrilling match against El Toro High School on January 8.
It was the first game between the two teams this season, and both sides played with intensity, constantly pressuring the ball. In the end, Aliso Niguel emerged victorious with a 73-65 win.
On Jan. 10, Aliso faced off against Mission Viejo High School. The game remained tight throughout, but Mission Viejo ultimately claimed the win, narrowly edging out Aliso with a score of 52-49.
Aliso’s third league matchup came on Jan. 15 against Beckman High School. Once again, the game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams exchanging leads. With a final layup or three-pointer often making the difference, Aliso was fortunate to be the last team to score, securing a hard-fought 54-52 win.
The team’s fourth league game, on Jan. 17, was charged with extra significance. Not only was it another crucial league game, but the 2005 Aliso Niguel Boys Basketball team also returned at halftime to commemorate their CIF championship victory from 20 years ago. The gym was packed with supporters, adorned in teal and Aliso’s school colors, creating an electric atmosphere for the players.
Capistrano Valley High School had the upper hand for most of the match, but Aliso surged in the second half, managing to take the lead in the final minutes. With just seconds left in the fourth quarter, Aliso was ahead by two points and seemed poised for victory. But Capo Valley managed a last-second score, pushing the game into overtime. In the extra period, Aliso scored once, but Capistrano Valley capitalized on their opportunities, ultimately winning 59-51.
Aliso bounced back in their matchup against Beckman High School on Jan. 20, securing a solid 71-60 victory. The win showcased the team’s depth, with several players contributing to the overall score.
Earlier in the season, Aliso celebrated Senior Night on December 19. Each senior was introduced alongside their family, reflecting on their time with the team and their future aspirations.
Senior Isaiah Shin shared his thoughts on the event: “Senior night was a great experience. It was nice to celebrate the hard work we’ve put into this program and our love for Aliso. Although we didn’t get the win, I feel our team grew even closer that night.”
Looking ahead, the Wolverines are focused on finishing strong in league play, with remaining games against El Toro, Mission Viejo, Capistrano Valley, and Trabuco Hills High Schools. Senior Likish Velineali commented, “We hope to win the rest of our games and become league champions.”
Currently, Aliso Niguel sits in third place in the league with a record of 3-2.
