As the new baseball season kicks off, Aliso Niguel High School’s baseball team is gearing up for another exciting and competitive year. With a mix of familiar players and newcomers, the team has high hopes for success as they aim to make a strong impact in their league.
The Aliso Niguel baseball team has contained talent and potential in the past and they continue to display it currently. Key returning players, such as five players who were a part of the team when they won the 2023 CIF championship their sophomore year, are expected to lead the team both on the mound and on the field.
Alongside these experienced varsity players, several underclassmen are stepping up to fill important roles. Coach Craig Hanson, now in his 20th season being Head Coach for Aliso Niguel, not including the four years he spent as assistant coach. Hanson has instilled a strong work ethic and team-first mentality, and his approach to balancing defense and offense will be key to their success.
The team’s strength lies in their pitching rotation, which includes a solid mix of experienced upperclassmen and up-and-coming talents. With a defense that focuses on clean plays and efficient communication, Aliso Niguel is looking to capitalize on their strong foundation.
The 2024 season was a solid one for Aliso Niguel, with the team finishing with a respectable record of 18-8 overall. Unfortunately, the team did not make it past the first round in CIF, losing 1-7 to Valencia High School. The offseason was a time for reflection and growth, and the team has made it a point to sharpen their skills. In the weight room and on the field the team has been working hard in preparation for the 2025 season.
Head Coach Hanson provided insight into the team’s goal this season saying, “[The team] will need to pitch to contact, throw strikes and play solid defense. If we can do those things reasonably well, get some timely hitting, then we will be competitive this season.”
The team has set high goals for themselves this season. Coach Hanson emphasizes a balanced approach—strong pitching, aggressive base running, and timely hitting. The team’s ultimate goal is to be competitive in the South Coast League and secure a league championship. Beyond that, fostering a positive team culture and continued player development will be a focus for the coaching staff.
Coach Hanson emphasizes that they are preparing plays by, “Having competitive at-bats and executing our situational offense, will also be a big factor in making this a successful season.”
For those interested in attending games, there will be plenty of opportunities to cheer the team on. Games will be played multiple times a week starting Feb. 18 against El Dorado High School. Showing up to support the team will help foster a strong connection between the team and its supporters.
As Aliso Niguel’s baseball team embarks on the 2025 season, the team’s outlook is filled with determination as the team is well-prepared to take on the challenges ahead. The upcoming season is looking promising as the team is ready to secure a league title for Aliso.
