2024 was an unforgettable year filled with drama, excitement and entertainment. We saw celebrities get married, go through divorces and even get arrested. World records were broken and history was made.
The year kicked off with the LVIII Super Bowl between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The halftime show was a performance by Usher with a guest appearance from Lil Jon. In the end, the Chiefs won the game and became back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
Things between Kendrick Lamar and Drake got heated again. The feud first started back in 2012 but started up again in 2024. They both dropped multiple diss tracks about each other, such as Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and Drake’s “Push Ups”. Their feud is ongoing and continues to shock fans.
The year took a surprising turn on Sept. 16 when Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested at a New York City hotel for multiple criminal charges. The following day, Combs appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to all the charges. He has a trial set to take place in May of 2025.
Kate Collins (12) says, “This story was so crazy to me and I couldn’t believe it when I first heard about it.”
The world was shocked to hear about the death of former One Direction star, Liam Payne. He died at the age of 31 in a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Oct. 16. It was reported that he fell from the third-floor balcony with multiple drugs in his system. All of the former members of One Direction attended his funeral the following month.
Jake Paul and Mike Tyson made headlines when they battled it out in a boxing match. On Nov. 15, Netflix hosted “Jake Paul v. Mike Tyson”, a live-stream event of the fight. After eight rounds that lasted two minutes each, Paul defeated Tyson by unanimous decision.
Selena Gomez announced her engagement to Benny Blanco. The two had been dating for about a year and many fans were surprised by their relationship at first. Gomez posted a picture on Instagram of her ring on Dec. 11.
During summer, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris kicked off on July 26 with a special performance from Celine Dion. Team USA walked away with the most medals overall, with a total of 126. Snoop Dogg was there to represent the U.S. teams and was seen cheering at multiple events. Break dancing was a brand new event in the Olympics and it was made popular by the Australian breaker, Raygun. The closing ceremony took place on Aug. 11 when the Olympic torch was handed over to the city of Los Angeles.
Devyn Diggs (12) states, “My favorite part of the Olympics was watching the breaking. Since it was the first time it was an event, I wanted to see what it was about.”
After dating for about three years, Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi decided to tie the knot. They announced their big news on Instagram. In May, they had a small, secret wedding with their families. Then, they had a more elaborate Italian wedding a few months later.
Many fans were sad to hear Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour was coming to an end. Her final performance took place on Dec. 8 in Vancouver. Swift had 149 shows across five continents. Her tour was a major success and became the highest-grossing tour of all time.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck officially decide to separate after their two-year marriage. The couple met back in 2002 and got engaged that same year. They broke off their engagement two years later but rekindled their relationship in 2021 and got married in July of 2022. On Aug. 20, 2024, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck.
The entertainment industry in 2024 was filled with excitement and chaos. As 2025 begins, it is going to be interesting to see what will happen and how this year will compare to 2024.
