Aliso Niguel High School is fortunate to have exceptional educators and coaches who dedicate their time to shaping the lives of students both in the classroom and on the court. One of these individuals is Coach Tinker, who has built a reputation not only as a dedicated teacher but also as the driving force behind the school’s successful beach volleyball program.
When asked about her approach to balancing her responsibilities, Coach Tinker highlighted the importance of organization: “I have multiple calendars for everything. I keep a calendar for my work life, my personal life, coaching and one master calendar that combines everything. I also make sure to block out time for unexpected tasks, catching up or simply resting.”
This meticulous preparation extends to her coaching duties, where she ensures that all orders, schedules and training supplies are ready well before practices begin.
Coach Tinker’s dual role as a teacher and coach provides her with unique insights into her students: “Seeing my students and athletes in both roles allows me to be more understanding of their circumstances and responsibilities. It also helps me hold them accountable academically and athletically.”
Her passion for improvement is evident in her coaching philosophy: “At the end of every season, I reflect on what went well and where there’s room to grow. I also gather feedback from my players to make the next season even better. It’s a revolving door of learning lessons.”
For Coach Tinker, the lessons learned on the court often overlap with those taught in the classroom: “One of the biggest lessons we can teach is about the person our students and athletes are becoming. From health and organization to managing responsibilities, it’s all about preparing them for life.”
Coach Tinker’s journey as the beach volleyball coach began serendipitously. During her first year teaching at ANHS, her background in collegiate beach volleyball was brought to the attention of Athletic Director Andrew Mashburn, who offered her the role.
She said, “I’m so thankful for that opportunity. Starting the beach volleyball program and watching it grow into a successful program has been a blessing. I’m incredibly proud of my players and grateful for the joy this role brings me every season.”
Through her dedication, organization, and passion, Coach Tinker continues to inspire both students and athletes at Aliso Niguel High School. Her commitment to excellence on and off the court ensures that her players leave not only as better athletes but also as better individuals prepared for the future.
