After winter break, students typically struggle to find the motivation to get through the first few weeks of school. However, knowing that winter formal is around the corner can spark inspiration and excitement. The best and most stressful part for girls preparing for this special event is finding a dress, but since it is the new year, there is a wide variety of trending dresses to choose from.
Dresses with unique necklines have been a popular choice for many girls at these recent school dances. Halter dresses are still widely popular and are worth buying, especially if they are adjustable and can be tied at the back. Strapless and off the shoulder necklines also make dresses very flattering and are excellent choices.
A rising trend for all pieces of clothing is cheetah print which would definitely draw attention from the crowd. Although it may not be the most traditional design wear on a winter formal dress, it is elegant and appropriate for a school dance. Cheetah print is a bold statement and can definitely bring out the confidence from whoever is wearing the dress.
Natalie Teigiser (12) shares her opinion on cheetah print: “I’ve been absolutely obsessed with cheetah and even tiger print lately. Personally, I don’t think I would wear a cheetah print dress for winter formal, but I approve of other people wearing one.”
A classic yet still popular design on dresses is floral print. Whether it is subtle with sparkles on it or covering the whole dress, floral dresses are a classic, stylish choice and definitely express femininity.
For a more vintage look, thrifted dresses would be the best option. Many thrift stores have a section dedicated to long, formal dresses, so it is easy to concentrate on one section, since thrift stores can get overwhelming. Plus, if the dress is thrifted, there is a smaller chance that another person would wear the same dress.
Despite the trend starting again in a year or two ago, bows on dresses are still trending. Bows on dresses can be worn in several different ways: they can be on the front chest area or tied at the lower back where it is dragging along for a more graceful appearance. Outside of the dress, tying a bow in hair can be a fashionable finishing touch to the winter formal look.
Another recently popular design in formal dresses have been ruffles. Ruffles have been typically worn diagonally across the entire dress or a part of the straps. Even so, there are many different kinds of ruffle dresses that can fit the tastes of anyone.
Paige Bergman (12) says, “I really like the style of ruffle dresses. I think the ones I’ve seen online and in person are all super cute, and I hope I can find a ruffle dress that’s right for me.”
A trendy dress that one favors may not suit another’s taste. So, the winter formal dress that brings out its owner’s confidence and beauty the most will certainly be the right one.
