A whiteboard in the school library has captured the attention of students and teachers at Aliso Niguel High School. Each day, a new word is posted with its definition, part of speech, and an example sentence. This latest addition to the library encourages students to learn and expand their vocabulary to incorporate new words into their everyday lives.
The whiteboard is divided into two sections, each featuring English and Spanish words. This bilingual approach helps students expand their vocabulary in two languages and fosters an appreciation for cultural diversity. The dual-language feature has been particularly beneficial for the school’s Spanish-speaking community, creating a bridge between their native language and English.
Sanaa Rishi (10) says, “I like how the whiteboard has two languages, it helps me learn new words every day, and I have seen improvement in my literacy skills in Spanish class.”
As the semester progresses, the board continues to draw attention to students each day, who look forward to including more words in their vocabulary. Various students, such as Rishi, have seen notable improvements in their grades. It is scientifically proven that learning new words helps our brain create more ways of retaining information.
The “Word of the Day” board has a deeper purpose than most students think. Research shows that expanding vocabulary enhances critical thinking, improves academic performance, and even boosts confidence in public speaking.
Ms. Cortez, who is responsible for creating the words, says, “I started learning new words for myself, but I was inspired to share the words with students … It benefits the ELD students to learn English words as well.”
As stated, the librarian started this word as a personal goal for herself to improve her Spanish. However, various students around the campus have seen a noticeable improvement in their expansion of vocabulary. This simple initiative has become a daily ritual for many students and staff, creating a sense of anticipation and engagement. With the new board, Aliso Niguel hopes to bring more cultures into the library. By connecting students through language, the board serves as a unifying tool, breaking down barriers between native English speakers and those learning the language.
The popularity of the whiteboard has also led to exciting ideas for its future. Many students have suggested adding interactive elements, such as QR codes linking to pronunciation guides, synonyms, or even short videos demonstrating the words in context. Others have proposed featuring words submitted by students themselves, making the experience even more interactive and inclusive.
In addition to its academic benefits, the board has subtly boosted school spirit. The board stands as a daily reminder of the shared goal of learning and self-improvement, fostering a positive and intellectually curious atmosphere in the library.
The whiteboard has proven that learning doesn’t have to be confined to textbooks or classrooms. At Aliso Niguel, it’s clear that the right word at the right time can inspire curiosity, creativity, and connection.
