With the holiday season underway, students are trying to capture the Christmas spirit by listening to Christmas music. At this time every year, people debate when to start playing the music and which songs best encapsulate the feelings of the holiday season.
The music brings about happy memories of past Christmases and prepares people for the upcoming holiday. This music is generally very uplifting and festive, with a common element of bells. It has different appeals for many students and the reason they enjoy; it is not the same for everyone.
Ira Adnaik (11) said, “I like Christmas music because I think everyone tends to romanticize Christmas time.”
There are two main types of Christmas music: classic songs and modern hits.
Classic Christmas music reminds many people of their childhood and the nostalgia associated with that time. Since the original became popular, notable artists have covered these pieces, continuing the reign of classic childhood sounds.
For example, Ashley Chang’s (11) favorite tune is Laufey’s recent cover of “Santa Baby,” which is a song originally sung by Eartha Kitt in 1953.
The other category of Christmas music is new songs created by artists to capture the modern holiday, potentially writing new classics for future generations.
Included in this grouping is “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande, one of Adnaik’s favorite songs of the season.
One popular Christmas tune is “Last Christmas” by Wham!, which Chang and Sloan Lorenzo (11) noted as a favorite of this time of year.
Along with the joy of the holiday season, students always argue about the best time to start listening to Christmas music. Many people start listening after Thanksgiving or at the beginning of December, but some prefer to begin their celebration earlier or later.
Kseniia Antipina (11) and Chang listen to Christmas music after Thanksgiving passes. They want to move past one holiday and on to the next.
Lorenzo said, “I start listening in December because I don’t want to overplay the music for myself or ruin the specialness of it.”
Adnaik differs from both these opinions, preferring to start listening to Christmas music in mid-December because she wants to celebrate her birthday with her favorite music, which is not the music of the holiday season.
Despite the difference in opinions, there are many similarities in what people do while listening to Christmas music. Many students enjoy studying with music in the background or driving to their favorite tunes.
Whatever the particular song, the beginning date or the activity done while listening, people worldwide connect through Christmas music to celebrate one of the biggest holidays.
