The offseason is officially over for Aliso’s Boys Wrestling with a long season ahead of them. The boys look forward to improving upon last season, and make many memories as well as history with the team.
The first season opener for the boys team was the annual Capistrano Valley High School four way which was held on Nov. 14.
Senior Derek Seo did not have quite a memorable experience from this meet: “In the first meet I got a concussion, which was not great, however I am back training and getting into the swing of things again.”
Almost two days later with little rest the Wolverines entered the South Torrance Spartan Kickoff tournament in preparation for the upcoming individual school duels ahead.
The standout of the tournament was Garen Keshishian (12) in the 113 pound bracket. In the first round he defeated Milikan’s Dallas Rosenthal by a fall in 1:29. Next up he faced Alexander Alvarez of Camarillo High School, which was no problem for Keshishian as he defeated Alvarez. Keshishian then defeated two more opponents in which he successfully made it to the finals, but his tournament run ended there.
Four days later the Wolverines had their first head to head duel against the Laguna Hills Hawks. This turned out to be a massive win for the Wolverines as they won comfortably 51 to 25. This has been the first win for the Wolverines against the Hawks in school history.
Following the head to head duel, the Wolverines participated in the Capo dual tournament.
To prepare for the tournament, senior Zane Aossey of the 157 weight bracket gives the Growling Wolverine details about what it is like trying to gain or lose weight to make the final: “It takes discipline because you crave food and feel empty, so you have to thoughtfully maintain food and water intake. If you do it smart and stay consistent however, it gets easier as time goes on the more you stay in shape.”
Aossey further adds, “It’s definitely manageable however. You just wear layers and do some running and light drilling.”
The Wolverines also beat Westminster High School, but lost to Cyprus High School.
On Dec. 7, the Wolverines have their annual Rim of the World Tournament. This tournament is special to the Wolverines as it is a big tradition for the Wolverines on the varsity team. The tournament is held in Big Bear, California which is located in the mountains. Due to the location, the Wolverines rent a cabin together for the duration of the tournament in which they can hang out in.
The Wolverines will be there for the weekend, as they leave together on Friday, and will head back to Aliso late Sunday.
Following the weekend, the Wolverines will take part in their final dual of the season against Trabuco Hills High School on Dec. 10. This is a memorable dual because this will be the final duel for all of the seniors this year.
