Aliso Niguel High School is set to offer a History of Rock course on campus in the spring semester of the 2024 to 2025 school year.
Starting on Jan. 14, 2025, during period 6, from 1:35 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the History of Rock class will be in session. The end date for the course is yet to be determined.
History of Rock, course number MUS28, is one of the Saddleback College courses offered at Capistrano Unified School District campuses through the program College @ Capo. The College @ Capo courses are a part of a dual enrollment program, which offers transferable credits to both the University of California as well as California State University systems. The course offers a total of three units, with three hours of lecture and fulfills the Visual Performing Arts and IGETC requirements. The grading method for this course is either a letter grade or a pass/no pass.
Ms. Nguyen, the College and Career counselor, said, “Many students at Aliso Niguel need to fulfill their VPA for UC and Cal State admissions, and we wanted to make it accessible for our students by providing it here on campus during the bell schedule. It is a great opportunity for students to enroll and complete their requirements.”
The History of Rock course discusses elements of rock music and explores its origin, development and evolution in style to the modern day. The course also examines the sociological and political aspects of rock music throughout the decades.
Hannah Zidbeck (12), a student who has taken a History of Rock course, said, “The History of Rock course was an enriching experience. Enrolling in this course improved my cultural literacy and understanding of complex topics expressed through music about problems present throughout American history.”
In order to sign up for the History of Rock course, students must fill out the “College @ Capo Interest Form,” a Google form used to indicate interest in dual enrollment for the spring semester, not an official registration form. On the posters around the ANHS campus as well as the Canvas dashboard, a scannable QR code is provided along with the link to the interest request form online. The career guidance specialist will contact students regarding the next steps in the registration process.
Students from the CUSD are allowed to sign up for any class offered in the district, regardless if they attend the school where the course is offered. However, students must have their own transportation to get to and from the classes if they decide to enroll in a course offered at a different school. The maximum number of classes a student can sign up for per semester is two courses, and it requires their counselor’s approval to ensure the student is able to handle the workload of the courses and the times do not conflict.
Students who have further questions refer to Ms. Nguyen through email or the College and Career Center on the ANHS campus. If a student were to be enrolled currently, the Fall semester 2024, in the History of Rock Saddleback course, they do not need to reapply.
