With the new addition of the Girls’ wrestling room, the Wolverines are thrilled for the season ahead. Last year, the girls were 4-4-0 in the league, landing them a spot in Division 2 of the CIF-SS playoffs. Unfortunately, they lost in the first round in a close matchup against Paloma Valley, with a final score of 36-48. This year they are currently 4-2-0 and competing in tournaments and matches every week.
When asked about the goal for this year Coach Ricardo Treviño said, “The goal for the season is always the state tournament. The second goal is to win CIF as a team. The third is to win league.”
These goals are very reachable for the lady Wolverines. Girls wrestling has only missed the state tournament since 2015, so the odds are definitely in their favor. The second goal is definitely harder to accomplish but with two returning CIF competitors, Eliana Treviño and Josephine Rettich, this goal is certainly obtainable. Becoming league champions may be a daunting goal, but the only real competitors Coach Treviño is concerned about is the San Clemente Tritons and the possible self-doubt of his athletes themselves.
So far the Wolverines have competed in the Capo 4-way and San Clemente Beach Battle tournaments. They have also competed in a variety of scrimmages and official matches to further hone their skills in preparation for league. In the Capo 4-way, the girls went 2-0 in duals landing them a fourth-place finish. Unfortunately, they did go unplaced in the San Clemente Beach Battle but that was designed for Aliso’s rookies to build up confidence and earn more playing time.
When asked how the team has been successful Coach Treviño says, “We are family and I preach LRL (Love, Respect, Loyalty). If we have that for each other, we will continue to succeed.”
To achieve this level of connectedness the Wolverines go running on the beach together, go on ten-mile hikes, and have barbecues sponsored by wrestlers’ families.
Varsity player Hannah Aossey (11) says, “I am one of 15 juniors of the team. After joining last year, I’ve gotten to be really close to my teammates. I also have gotten the chance to play with my younger sister, Sommer.”
Due to wrestling being a very physically demanding sport, there could be multiple instances where players don’t feel confident, especially after losing a dual meet. By establishing a connection between players, Coach Treviño can focus on how he can improve the overall skill set of each wrestler. This may include working on their takedowns, an offense skill, or their sprawling technique, a defensive move, all while ensuring the mental state of his wrestlers is still top-notch.
Before the start of league, the Wolverines competed in one tournament, on Dec. 7 in the Santa Ana Lady Saints Varsity Tour tournament. During league, they are competing in the Lady Blackwatch tournament on Dec. 27-28 in Upland. These tournaments will prep the girl’s varsity team for league matches against Tesoro, San Clemente, and El Toro. The lady Wolverines seem to be well on their way to accomplishing their goals, all while maintaining their tenets of love, respect and loyalty.
