The National Honors Society program at Aliso Niguel provides free after-school tutoring to help students with any subject necessary. Taking place in the library, the program offers academic support through sessions with NHS members.
For many students, the classroom environment can feel overwhelming, with limited time to address every question. Luckily, NHS tutoring offers a quiet setting where students can learn from each other.
NHS is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States that recognizes excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS encourages its members to contribute positively to their schools and communities through volunteer work, leadership activities, and tutoring programs. Applications have been closed, but students must meet specific academic requirements to become a member. The application process is extremely competitive, which makes NHS members reliable for tutoring.
The NHS tutoring program is open to all, and joining is simple: show up during the scheduled times with your materials and questions. All tutoring sessions are held in the library after school on Wednesdays. There are around ten tutors at every session, if not more, who can assist with any topic.
The sessions cover all subjects including math, science, English, history, and even foreign languages. The NHS tutors have experience with all levels of subjects too, whether it would be normal, honors, or an AP course. No sign-up is required to be able to attend the sessions, making the program accessible and easy to use for all.
Sanaa Rishi (10) says, “I have gotten lots of resources for subjects like chemistry, and overall I have seen noticeable change to my test scores. I am planning to go there next week to feel more prepared for finals coming up.”
A wide variety of students, like Rishi, have had success with the program so far and have seen a major improvement in their grades. The tutoring program hopes to bring student’s grades up as well as help others gain a better understanding of topics.
Mrs. McCllean, the advisor for NHS, says, “In the future, we hope to expand the program to two days a week rather than just one since this program used to be a very big thing here on campus.”
With the program expanding, students will have a wider variety of days they can attend free tutoring sessions. If a student is unable to receive help in Wolverine+ or other tutor sessions, the free NHS program is a great free alternative for all students on campus.
With the upcoming stress of finals, students might need extra support regarding certain subjects. Luckily, members of the NHS are more than willing to help other students with their academic success.
At Aliso Niguel High School, the NHS tutoring program embodies the spirit of service, collaboration, and academic achievement. By offering their time and knowledge, NHS members are strengthening the school community and proving that together, students can overcome any challenge.
