Aliso’s girls basketball team is looking forward to opening the 2024-2025 campaign strong. This year, there are lots of new faces on the team, with five freshmen taking varsity spots for the year.
There has been major news last season for the girls’ basketball team, as a new head coach, Scott Majors, was appointed in April as announced in a post by the girls’ basketball team’s Instagram page.
Coach Majors has lots of qualified experience in basketball, playing for the Trabuco Hills High School basketball team when in high school, and then playing college basketball at Concordia University in Irvine. Majors also has previous coaching experience at San Juan Hills as well.
Maddie Denny, Reily Hefty, Olivia Carbajal and Andreanna Javing are the four seniors this year, with their jobs being to lead and build character for the younger Wolverines on the team.
Aliso played its first preseason home game against Woodbridge High School. The game ended in a thriller, with Aliso coming out on top, winning the game 43-42.
Hefty, a star player, was asked how she thought the team played following the team’s first victory of the season: “For our first game, the team definitely came out with a lot of energy. It’s nice to start out the season with a win, and it’s cool to see the improvement of the newer players and returning players alike. Again, it was a great game to start out the season too, and everyone played their toughest and best!”
The Wolverines have been working tirelessly to get ready for the upcoming season that is ahead of them.
Carbajal gives the Growling Wolverine insight of how the team is practicing: “This year we are putting focus on shooting the ball at any open time, but also improving our defense. Through practice, we have been doing drills to help turn the person with the ball in hopes of slowing them down.”
The Wolverines have also been running a drill that has delivered them success as well.
Carbajal added, “We have also been doing a drill called New Mexico, which helps us improve our three-point shooting. We are given four minutes, and each time we try to beat our previous score. Currently, my current record is 67.”
Following Woodbridge, the Wolverines have a tough and long schedule ahead of them this year. Three days later, the Wolverines will play against Samueli Academy, and then Laguna Beach twice over the next couple of days.
Then they will play against Foothill High School and Ramona Covenant High School to finish out November. They are then later playing against teams such as Tesoro High School, Godinez Fundamental and Temecula Valley for their December games.
This season, Aliso will play in the South Coast League, competing against teams such as San Juan Hills, Dana Hills, Trabuco Hills and San Clemente.
With hard work and determination, the girls are looking to win a league championship and make it to CIF this season.
