Aliso’s Flag Football team has made history over the past two years in the up-and-coming sport. They have contributed to a profound impact on women’s sports in the future, but the powerful team fell to Dos Pueblos High School on Oct. 26 in the 2025 CIF Playoffs.
Aliso was one of only sixteen flag football teams in the Division 1 playoffs and finished 10th in those same CIF playoffs. The number of schools in the CIF Southern Section of California is 270. The future looks very promising for Aliso, and they have no plans to stop in their third year.
The team traveled to Santa Barbara to compete against Dos Pueblos High School, with a record of 17-6, which unfortunately beat the Wolverines with a final score of 39-6.
“Some of the challenges we faced were people being tired from their other sports since the majority of us are multisport athletes, but we tried to solve them by encouraging each other through practice when it was hard to give 100 percent,” says Sloan Lorenzo (11).
Despite the challenges that Aliso faced, they completed their 2024 season with an overall record of 24-5 and were undefeated with 8 wins in league play to win the South Coast League Championship for the second year in a row.
Captain Sienna Stand (12) comments on the season as a whole: “Watching the team grow from start to finish has made me realize how lucky I was to be a part of such a supportive and inspiring team. Being a captain this season was such a privilege because I got to become the person that others looked up to.”
Stand was recently selected to participate in the Chargers LA vs OC All-Star game on November 25 at SoFi Stadium along with her teammate Alaina Villa (12). Throughout the season, Stand scored a total of 114 points, 18 total touchdowns, and had an impressive 1145 receiving yards.
Despite the loss on Saturday, the girls fully intend to return even stronger next season for their third year of flag football at Aliso.
Lorenzo said, “Next season I’m looking forward to being back with my teammates, and I think we’re going to focus on being faster and more urgent in each play that we do, focusing on one play at a time. We also want to make our goals that we win a League title again and the CIF Championship next year.”
The unexpected and untimely loss, though unfortunate, does not take away the season’s results and the irreplaceable memories made by the athletes.
“Despite the season being cut shorter than we had hoped, my time spent on the team was full of unforgettable memories. I am so proud of all the girls, and I cannot wait to see what they will accomplish next year!” says Stand.
Lorenzo adds, “The most memorable moment was playing in the Chargers tournament and coming back from being down by two touchdowns, and then winning in the second half against Edison High School, which was probably the best game we had.”
As these female athletes contributed to flag football’s rise in popularity and respect, it set a new precedent for sports at Aliso Niguel High School: to constantly improve, compete, and most importantly, successfully represent Aliso at all levels of the game.
