There are over 100 clubs that enrich the students at Aliso Niguel High School, however, only one teaches about the scary future of AI and computer programming. Software and Machine Learning Club President Oliver Lu (11) created this club to create a safe and engaging environment for students to learn coding and the future of technology, which everyone of all levels is encouraged to join to learn about the future of tech.
The mission of Software and Machine Learning is to teach the applications of AI and how it works as well as its intricacies.
Vice President Molei Zhong (11) expresses the importance of AI as it is “obviously going to be prevalent in the future so [he] think[s] it’s important that everybody knows at least something about it.”
On top of AI, members will learn how to code in various models such as Python, from basic programming to advanced algorithmic problem-solving. Not only will students learn how coding works, but the club also evokes creativity and critical thinking skills. This club hopes to provide knowledge for every student with basic knowledge and hands-on experience in coding that may pave the way for future careers in technology.
Software and Machine Learning meets on Fridays bi-weekly and is filled with activities that target both beginners and advanced members. One of the founding members will start with a quick lesson on either AI or coding and afterward, students will be able to apply the new knowledge by working on projects or having hands-on experience coding. Club founders are also there to help with coding challenges that you may encounter.
Club President Oliver Luu (11) wants to begin hosting competitions “..trying to…develop the best general purpose AI possible to best complete a certain task.”
Ms. Lee, a computer science teacher, is the advisor for Software and Machine Learning. She plays an important role in managing the club and helping guide future plans for the club.
Beyond technical skills, Software and Machine Learning provide crucial life skills, like a sense of confidence. By encouraging students to navigate through the challenges of learning to code, it helps students become better problem-solvers and critical thinkers. The club provides a supportive and safe environment, allowing members to ask questions and build on these skills.
Aliso Niguel’s Software and Machine Learning is a creative space where students can discover their potential and interest in AI and computer science with members supporting each other. Students meet regularly in room 607 at lunch every two Fridays. To join, text “@anhsssml” to 81010.
Oliver’s final message: “I hope people will become more aware of privacy risks using AI online.”
