Club Rush Goes Virtual

Thanks to the power of technology, Club Rush was still an important event of the fall semester. Club Rush was held on Friday, Oct. 2. Due to the novel coronavirus, Club Rush was held virtually this year, rather than in person with club booths.

Since club rush was a virtual event, ASB has adapted, and club commissioners Taylor Wilson and Asli Bilgin are proud to present the school’s first-ever online Club Rush event.

Students were able to learn about clubs through Flipgrid, an app that allows users to create short videos. These videos contained information about the club’s missions and sign up information.

“It was okay, but some of the videos were of low quality. It was also difficult to find information on how to contact clubs”, says Ava Romero, a participant in the event.

“I think having club leaders make videos is the best alternative to an in-person club rush. It was also easier to get information across since it was not as hectic as an in-person event”, says Safina Khan, Co-President of the Competitive Writer’s Club, and Competitive Business Club.

She also said, “It was interesting to see how clubs advertised without the hectic atmosphere of an in-person event”.

Unlike club rushes of the past, students had access to these Flipgrid presentations the entire day, rather than just during lunch. Club Rush was also held on one day only, rather than separating extracurricular clubs from service clubs.

This year, Aliso Niguel has a grand total of 69 clubs, with 27 extracurricular and academic clubs, and 42 service clubs. Some returning clubs include Math and Science Olympiads, ANHS Leo Club, Key Club, and Best Buddies. New additions to this year’s lineup include School on Wheels, Paper Bridges, GSA, and Ocean Environmentalists.

Club meetings will begin virtually, and as the school reopens, live meetings will be held.

While Club Rush 2020 may differ from any other year, there were still many different clubs to join during this virtual event.
