As we are in the midst of autumn, students are expressing their enthusiasm for this season, enjoying the change of leaves, pumpkin spice and holidays that take place during this time.
One of the best parts of autumn is the change in weather and nature when the temperature cools down and the air feels crisp, especially in the morning.
Leaves also turn colors like red, orange and brown. Students enjoy the beautiful scenery, which provides them with a calming environment, especially when some people are stressed about their classes and upcoming tests.
Fall seasonal food is also a favorite, with popular foods used in dishes such as pumpkin, squash, mushrooms and cranberries. With Thanksgiving, common dishes include turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and many more. Pie is another food that many people love, with flavors like pecan, pumpkin, apple and cherry.
Evie Scherffius (11), a student at Aliso Niguel, says, “Every day, I eat my pumpkin bagel and I put on butter and cinnamon sugar.”
Starbucks is popular during the fall, with the fall and winter menus offered during this season. The iced pumpkin chai latte is a favorite drink from the fall menu, and so is the well-known pumpkin spice latte. The winter menu is introduced in November, with popular drinks like the iced gingerbread chai latte and the cranberry orange refresher.
Fall fashion is extremely popular among students as well. Many students begin to wear sweaters, headbands, jeans, leather jackets and flannel shirts. Common colors worn include beige, brown, red, dark green and navy. Students layer up more to prepare for the cooler weather.
In addition, uggs start to make their appearance annually around this time. Fall fashion usually focuses on comfort, making it well-liked among students.
Yas Eftekhari (10), a student at ANHS, says, “I love wearing sweaters in fall and wearing comfy clothes when it gets cooler.”
The festivities around this time are also highly popular. Activities like going to pumpkin patches and food fairs are very common, especially in Orange County.
There are a lot of well known fall shows and movies that make their comeback around this time. Gilmore Girls is one of the most popular shows, as most of the episodes take place in a fall setting. Scary movies such as Scream, Halloween and It are a few films that many people enjoy watching around Halloween.
Scherffius says, “During the fall, everyone starts to watch Gilmore Girls again, and you can see fall happening in the show.”
The beginning of the holiday season is also a huge part of fall. First, Halloween is a great time to be with friends and dress up in fun costumes. Thanksgiving is another holiday many students look forward to, with a week off from school and time to spend with family and friends.
Although Christmas isn’t in the fall, the anticipation leading up to Christmas and other holidays is a big part of the fall season as well. Students begin Christmas shopping and making wishlists, as well as planning their holiday parties. People also decorate their homes in preparation for the holidays.
Eftekhari says, “I like fall because of family and friends. I also love the change in the color of the leaves and weather;…it just has such a good vibe.”
