Both boys and girls surf have had a very successful season thus far, with both teams only having two more matches left to see if they will make it to the championships.
The Varsity Girls Surf has been dominating throughout the regular season and through the league. They are currently 5-0-0 in the league and 7-1-1 overall.
The Varsity Boys Surf has unfortunately not been doing as well as they hoped. However, Coach Werner admits this season was a season of improvement rather than competing to win the championship. They are currently 2-3 in league and 2- 7 overall.
When asked which match has been the most difficult for the boys Coach Werner says, “It’s always been the San Clemente Tritons. They are national champions. San Juan Hills has a very talented boys’ team as well.”
The boys have played San Clemente twice, sadly losing both times. In the first match on October 2, the score was 15-6 on longboard. In shortboard the score was 12-30, making the first match against the Tritons 18-45. The second game was similar in the difference in score. In longboard, the match was relatively close with a score of 8-13. While on the shortboard, the score was 24-44, making the final score 32-57.
The girls, on the other hand, have had more successful matches thus far. Coach Werner says, “Girls longboards team can match up with anyone. Shortboard it can go either way, depending on the day.”
Even though the girls seem to have the better team they have still struggled against the infamous San Clemente Tritons. In their first game, they lost 7-14 in longboard and 9-12 in shortboard, meaning the final score was 16-26. However, this was the only loss the girls have had the whole season. The second game ultimately ended in a tie. In longboards, the score was 9-12, while the shortboard score was 12-9.
Both teams may not have done the best against the San Clemente Tritons, however, they crushed the Capo Valley Cougars.
The first game was on Oct. 4. In longboard, the boys beat the Cougars 13-8. In shortboard, they beat them 28-14, so the final score was 41-22. The second game they played against them was on Oct. 25. This game was much closer because they were trailing after the longboard since the score was 10-11. Luckily, the male Wolverines were able to come back 22-20 in the shortboard. The final score was 32-31.
The girls Wolverines games against the Cougars were about as close as the first boy’s game. The first game’s longboard score was 15-6 and the shortboard score was also 15-6. Meaning the final score was 30-12. The second game score of longboard was the same as the first, with it being 15-6. The second game´s shortboard score was 14-7. The final score was 29-13, giving the Wolverines an easy win before their second game against San Clemente.
Even though both teams have won, there can still be improvements, especially for next year. Coach Werner says, “Surfing locations conducive to the waves they will surf at league finals and state will give us a better chance of winning more games and another State Championship.”
If the team can successfully do this, they will have a better knowledge of the different waves they will face, which will make them prepared for anything that’s to come especially in their final two league games against the Laguna Beach Breakers and the Dana Hills Dolphins.
