In the month of Oct. different communities around the country come together to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This national campaign recognizes the strong women who have had breast cancer and those who have lost their lives to this disease.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Every year, one in three women with cancer is diagnosed with breast cancer.
Students at Aliso recognize breast cancer awareness month in a variety of different ways such as Aliso’s annual pink out game. Every year Aliso supports the campaign by designating the theme of one of the Den home games to the color pink.
This year, Aliso’s Pink Out game was on Oct. 11 against Northwood High School. At the game students dressed out in pink to match the theme wearing a variety of different pink items. Aliso’s ASB made signs and displays of pink ribbons to show Aliso’s support for the month.
The pink ribbon has become a universal symbol of breast cancer awareness. The symbol has become an effective way to represent the coming together of women in unity.
The football players wore pink armbands, shoes and socks to show their recognition. The cheerleaders also took part and wore pink bows and had pink pom poms.
Vice Principal Mrs. Hosseni further exemplified the way Aliso shows support for the cause saying, “I feel like some topics such as breast cancer used to seem too personal to address. I believe that normalizing them and making them a part of a daily conversation can help to spread awareness on the subject. Having events such as Pink out really shows the widespread recognition of the cause.”
Aliso’s girls volleyball team held its yearly “Dig Pink” game on Oct. 8 where students showed up dressed in pink. The event’s theme was dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness and included raffles and prizes to raise money for the cause. In the past, the team raised large amounts of money for the cause and continues to make an effort to fund it.
When asked about finding more ways to educate students on the importance of the subject, Mrs. Hosseni exemplified, “As an administrator, I would always support any initiative to educate students and I believe that the best way to do that would be through a breast cancer awareness club.”
Aliso Does not have a club dedicated to breast cancer awareness and this would be the perfect club to add to the group of clubs present at Aliso. Using a club to spread awareness can help students understand why we dedicate a month to those with breast cancer.
If you are interested in supporting those fighting breast cancer there are many organizations that are dedicated to helping women who have been diagnosed with this disease. Organizations such as The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a non-profit organization that Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundations are all organizations devoted to helping breast cancer patients that accept donations.
Through the month of Oct., it is important to recognize and spread awareness for breast cancer awareness month. Showing support can be as simple as wearing pink and is very beneficial in bringing the community together.
