Dance Appreciation held their annual Rummage Sale on Saturday, Oct. 12 in the senior area at the front of Aliso Niguel High School. Each member of DA collected lightly used, good quality items from their own homes to be sold.
They had all types of items for sale, like clothes, jewelry, home decor, toys, games and holiday decorations. Donuts and water were also offered.
There were members of DA all around Wolverine Way encouraging and directing people towards the rummage sale.
The Rummage Sale is an annual fundraiser that has been held for more than 10 years and helps raise money for DA. This year DA called their sale a Vintage Rummage Sale.
DA is not a school-funded program. They receive all their money through donations, fundraisers and their annual end of the year showcase.
DA Coach Jasmine Orcaz says, “We do not receive any funding from the school, it is all through fundraising and family donations, so we are hoping to use the funds for things like our competition costumes, competition fees and anything we can do to make this a great year.”
As DA enters Season 28, they have high hopes for this season. It is important to them that they raise as much money as they can.
They are led by head coaches Jasmine Orcaz and David Lim. The officers this year are captains Alyssa Vargas (12) and Avah Parsi (11), sergeants at arms Noelia Rodriguez-Martinez (11) and Nicole Aguirre (11), team relations officer Lexi Burgonio (11) and social media manager Zoe Vovan (11).
Throughout the year, DA participates in multiple competitions and showcases. These performances require money for costumes, transportation and other expenses. DA’s first performance of the year is at the freshman orientation. They perform at every pep rally and have their final performance at their showcase at the end of the season.
Avah Parsi (11), a 3 year member and one of the captains of DA, says “Competition is one of my favorite parts and I am just really excited to compete and win. I feel like we could really go for it and if we go for it we can win.”
DA had a strong season last year and they believe this season is going to be another successful year.
DA welcomes students of all grades from Aliso to come try out and be a part of their program. The goal of DA is to be able to share the passion and expression of hip hop and street dancing.
DA was started by former Aliso student John-Paul “JP” San Pedro in 1997, when Aliso Niguel first opened. Since then, the Dance Appreciation program has grown bigger each year.
The talent, passion, and determination of each member of DA over the years is the reason the program has gone as far as it has. However, money also plays an important part in their ability to compete and be successful.
The funds from this year’s Rummage Sale will help DA have another good season.
