Amidst the hectic college application season, Ms. Nguyen is offering senior students weekly workshops during Wolverine+ to help them prepare and go through the college application process. The workshops are located in room 500, inside the College and Career Center. Students can sign up for these workshops through Enriching Students.
Every Wednesday, Ms. Nguyen dedicates her Wolverine+ session to a specific topic related to the college application process. She gives information and tips on essay writing and how to make yourself stand out on college applications. She also gives specific presentations on different application portals, such as Common App or Cal State Apply.
Every Thursday and Friday is mainly devoted to college applications and essay support. Students who signed up for the Wolverine+ session sit at a desk, log onto their personal devices and work independently on their essays and applications. Students who have individual or specific questions regarding their essays line up near Ms. Nguyen’s desk and wait to have their inquiries addressed.
Ms. Nguyen, the College and Career counselor, said, “My goal is to provide a space on campus for senior students to be able to work on their applications during the school day. Many seniors are busy outside of school, and I want them to be able to have a designated time and space to work on what they need help with and be able to have access to support and someone who can help answer their questions.”
The College and Career Center is smaller than most classrooms, so the Wolverine+ sessions often get filled with students quickly. In order to book a spot in the College and Career Center, it is advised to sign up as soon as possible when the window to self-schedule for the following week is available. Ms. Nguyen encourages senior students to come to her Wolverine+ sessions and get the support they need.
Amitis Yaghini (12) said, “Being able to get a second opinion and advice on my essays definitely gave me a wider perspective on what I should write in my essays and what changes I should make. Attending the workshops also gave me insight into what my peers are working on in their essays. Getting the essay support and also being surrounded by students working allows me to be more productive and motivates me to revise my essays.”
Many students use the workshops as an opportunity to focus on essays because the environment provided is free of distractions from other activities. Maximizing their time is important during this stressful time in their lives. Senior students can also communicate with their peers inside the room on their essays.
These college essay and application workshops will be held throughout the fall semester for the duration of the college application season. Ms. Nguyen plans on transitioning her Wolverine+ workshops into financial aid workshops during the spring semester because once college application season ends, financial aid season begins.
