With new students coming from all over the world, Aliso Niguel High School is fortunate enough to provide the English Language Development program for students.
ELD is a program offered at many schools for students whose first language is not English. The purpose of the course is for students to acquire English proficiency. Students eventually will develop their reading, writing, and speaking English skills.
Every year, more students come from all over the world. These students deserve to be recognized more since they contribute to the school’s diversity. It’s important for these students to feel celebrated, respected, and safe at school.
As the ELD program continues to grow, Aliso Niguel High School remains passionate about supporting its multilingual learners. With new initiatives focused on providing additional academic resources and celebrating the cultural diversity of its students, our school aims to create an even more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students.
Ms. Villasenor says, “An estimate of more than 21 different languages that are spoken here at Aliso Niguel High School.”
Having the diversity of so many languages helps other students learn more about other cultures. Students and staff around campus can learn more about cultural backgrounds, popular dishes and even learn some basic phrases from a range of different languages.
Coming to a new school where you don’t even know the language can be challenging. It’s difficult to adapt to the new lifestyle and understand values that are not traditional for some students. Thankfully, with the vast variety of students, many resources can help new students feel at home. All students deserve to be treated with the same amount of respect regardless of where they are coming from. These students also deserve to get the same opportunities and receive the same high school experience as everyone else.
An Lu (10), who is in the ELD program, provides her feedback as she says, “I like how nice the teachers are. I improved my English a lot by talking to classmates and by talking to other students around the school. The program overall has helped my English get a lot better. I feel more confident now when I speak to other people.”
The teachers around campus have done an excellent job of providing genuine care for those who are struggling to learn English. The program of our school is said to be extremely successful, keeping in note that the pass rate is high. Various students have been able to learn and build on fundamental communication skills.
Students who take ELD classes can earn the Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating proficiency in both English and another language. The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes a student’s bilingual skills. Knowing two languages is extremely impressive, and amazing for college applications.
Overall, these hard-working students are extremely talented. Students in the ELD program deserve to be recognized more for their hard efforts and the diversity they bring to Aliso Niguel.
Through its dedication to cultural celebration, academic growth, and the personal success of its ELD students, ANHS sets an example of how diversity enriches and strengthens a school community.
