As of Oct. 17, the Aliso Girls Tennis Team is 6-1, only losing to Tesoro, which was unexpected. However, the girls are ready to do whatever it takes to claim league champions for the fifth year in a row. As of right now, they are currently in first place in league with Beckman and Tesoro closely trailing behind. This week, Aliso won against Beckman and San Clemente for a second time, giving them a high probability of winning league championships.
Coach Pinter says, ¨Realistically, we could place anywhere between first and third place, with the state our competition is now.¨
Aliso is already guaranteed to claim a spot in CIF, however, receiving the league title gives the team better chances to make it further in the league. Depending on how a team is placed in league decides what kind of team they are playing in the first round of league. If Aliso would place first in their league division, they would play a team in third in a different Orange County division.
Varsity player Miah Zhou (10) says, “They’re is definitely a lot of pressure when playing in CIF but when we play a third-place team, a bit of pressure is taken off because odds are they are not as skilled as we are.¨
Last Tuesday was Aliso’s closest game that they’ve played in a long time. This game was against the Beckman Patriots. For the first time this league season, the Wolverines had to go into a tie-break set.
In round one, the Wolverines attempted to get an early lead of 4-2. However, the Patriots bounced back with a score of 5-1. The Wolverines knew they had to give it everything they had in their last round to win, however, they only ended up tying the score 9-9, meaning the round three score was again 4-2. In this tie-breaker set the Wolverines crushed any hopes of the Patriots winning with the round four score 5-1, giving the Wolverines the victory.
Luckily for the Girls Tennis Team, the game against San Clemente was not as intense. The first round ended in favor of the Wolverines 5-1 to set the pace. The Tritons unsuccessfully tried to come back with a tied score of 3-3 in round two. In the final set, the Wolverines closed out the game effortlessly with the round three score being 4-2. Meaning the final score of the Aliso Niguel game against San Clemente was 12-6. This is the kind of game the Wolverines would hope for CIF but unfortunately, they are prepared to face teams far better.
The girls tennis league season is quickly ending. Their last game is against Tesoro, the only team they have lost to. This game will hopefully make their final league record 7-1 and give them the title of league champions. From there, we as a school have to cheer them on, so they can do great things in CIF.
