College visits are being held at lunch in the Career Center or library for students of all grade levels, so they can get some help with building a college list and learning about schools. Representatives present for 20 to 30 minutes to provide important information about their school that allows students to connect with the college and its atmosphere.
These college visits may be beneficial to help students gain a better understanding of a college they are interested in or to help students discover more colleges to help build a list. The sessions are good resources to learn more about a college and the application process. By seeing a presentation, and taking in information about schools students have a better understanding of what the college requires.
Some colleges may track demonstrated interest, which is the process of a college keeping a tab on a students applicant profile and the amount of times they have interacted with a college. So, attending these sessions could help increase a student’s chances at admission.
Ms. Nguyen states, “The colleges see you spoke to an admissions representative which can help your chances of getting into the school.”
These sessions cover many important topics including campus life, admissions, class sizes and acceptance rates. They also may answer any questions students have and educate students more about college in an easier way through presenting the information and providing brochures. It allows students to learn about a school’s atmosphere which can help underclassmen understand what they are looking for in a college and factors to consider when building a list.
Typically, the presentations follow a format beginning with information that covers areas about the general school facts that may mention the specific admissions process and requirements.
During this time, there is a great opportunity for students to gauge what the admissions officers are looking for and the requirements that school has. Following the initial presentation, there is usually a session for students to ask questions. Next, they provide brochures and materials with quick information and statistics, and then some may end with a session about application tips or reminders.
Sydney Elovitz (12) states, “They help to provide information you would not always be able to find on your own.”
These visits will continue to take place throughout the fall season and are set up by Ms. Stauffer. Anyone can attend a session, by checking the school’s website for the full list of college visits, looking out for emails.
Colleges also choose to come based on students’ interest levels in the years prior. Colleges will reach out to Aliso Niguel High School and then arrange to send a representative to meet with students. This way colleges are visiting students who know they want to attend or who have interest in applying.
Overall, college visits are a great resource that give students a more comprehensive look at different schools and provide some specific tips and information that may not be found online.
