The 2024 United States Presidential Election is coming up with the election day being on Nov. 5, 2024. Voters will decide between the candidates from the major parties: Republican, Democratic and third-party contenders.
The Democratic party nominee for the presidential election is current Vice President Kamala Harris. Her running mate is Tim Walz, who is the current governor of Minnesota. The Republican party nominee for the election is former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate is JD Vance, who is a senator from Ohio. Those running for the presidency in the independent third party are Cornel West, Jill Stein and Chase Oliver.
The Democratic candidate and current vice president Kamala Harris is a major contender in the upcoming election. Some of her key policies include restoring Roe v. Wade, which was overturned in 2022, raising the taxes for big companies and raising the child tax credit and has promised in her policies that the government would provide as much as $25,000 in assistance for first-time home buyers.
The Republican candidate and former US president Donald J. Trump is seeking a second term.
Trump has some notable policies; for instance, Trump is adamant about strengthening border security, enforcing stricter immigration laws and has even promised to have massive deportation of illegal immigrants. Trump has an America-First agenda when it comes to foreign policies, and he does not seem to support NATO. Trump has stated that he wants to bring down inflation and “fix the economy”.
Mrs. Newkirk comments, “Economics is the primary concern of Americans with inflation being a major concern and both Trump and Harris have very different plans on how to fix inflation. Groceries are expensive but housing is very expensive as well and I know Harris wants to assist first-time home buyers and to build three million structures. Trump wants to do tax cuts so people can have more money to afford more expensive housing”
The two major candidates had their first debate on Sept. 10 on ABC News Live. Since then Harris has agreed to have another debate with Trump on Oct. 23, 2024, but Trump declined, stating it is too late to hold another debate when voting has already started.
Mrs. Reilly says, “I would say that this presidential campaign is shown to expose a lot of division we have in this country over policy issues, so it’s important for voters to do their research not only on the candidates themselves but also the policies they promote. I think it’s noteworthy to say in the last presidential election, we saw the frugality of democracy and as we take part in the electoral process and try to protect democratic institutions, have faith in our election processes and have free and fair elections in this country. One of the major candidates is a woman of color so that itself makes it a historical election in American history.”
