The Cubing Club kicks off the school year by hosting an official cubing competition partnering with the World Cube Association.
With over 100 active clubs at Aliso Niguel High School, only one involves a whirl of colorful twisting squares and quick-fingered competitors: Cubing Club. Led by President Arav Mody (11), Cubing Club allows students to develop critical thinking skills and is a great place for those who are interested in logic puzzles and hobby exploration.
With 175 competitors and over 240 guests across Southern California in attendance, the club partnered with the World Cube Association to host a cubing competition on Sept.8, 2024. The World Cube Association hosts various competitions around the world with upcoming events in Bangkok and Brazil. The events included solving a 3×3, 2×2, 4×4, and a pyramid-shaped cube.
Oliver Luu (11)- Vice President of the Cubing Club- shared, “The goal is to host another cubing competition and hopefully get more students involved to continue growing this fun hobby. We look forward to the plethora of events planned for this club.”
Although this club involves solving different types of cubes including 3x3s, and 4x4s which can be challenging, it is open to anyone regardless of their background in solving cubes. It takes practice to get good at cubing so just starting goes a long way.
At its core, this club is about creating a community for those who want to expand their knowledge and create an environment where students can think outside the box. The founders of this club help guide everyone to achieve this goal.
Mody explained, “You don’t need to be smart or have talent to cube. All you need is an interest to learn and have the initiative to learn.”
Originally created in 2019, Mody wanted to bring back the cubing club, an uncommon, but fun hobby for students to enjoy. With the help of his co-founders and club advisor, Mr. Silberman, they were able to make this dream come true.
Mr. Silberman, a Biology teacher, proved vital in making this club possible by hosting over 30 meetings over the course of a semester. He also spends extra time helping plan events such as the one hosted on Tuesday. Mody says he is grateful for the time and effort Mr. Silbermen puts in the club.
Mody’s message to everyone? “I hope to expand your knowledge and skills by providing a club that can help find your passion and to provide a safe, fun space for everyone to enjoy a fun hobby.”
Students meet regularly every Monday in room 705 at lunch to learn how to solve cubes and discuss future events that will be held. Occasionally, they provide food for everyone to enjoy and an even friendlier environment to learn in. If you would like to join, text “@anhscubing” to 81010.
