Victoria Yap was recently elected to be the new Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) president at Aliso Niguel High School, and she is excited to take on the new responsibilities as president. Mrs. Yap and her team are committed to ensuring that students and families have the resources they need for success both inside and outside of the classroom.
PTSA plays an important role in organizing events, fundraising, hosting meetings and also helping to spread information about what is happening on the school campus. The organization also enhances the community and communication between the school staff and families of the students. The PTSA helps create opportunities that directly benefit both students, staff and parents alike.
The current PTSA has done an excellent job on staying up to date with the events going on around school and setting reminders of important events and dates on their Instagram and Facebook pages.
Mrs. Yap has been involved with the PTSA for 12 years and has a son who attends Aliso Niguel.
She says, “I’ve been involved with PTSA since my son was in kindergarten, so I find it a great way to stay involved to know what’s happening on campus and getting to be involved in my kid’s education.”
Mrs. Yap adds, “The top priorities for PTSA this year are to bring better programs for the students on campus; for example, we have senior scholarships and if seniors become a part of PTSA, they are eligible for senior scholarships. The other priority we have is mental health and how we can help mental wellness on campus as well. Some of our students were told the mental health appointments are backed up so how can we help that program and any type of educational or safety things we can bring on campus is really the biggest concern for us.”
In addition to mental health, Mrs. Yap is passionate about creating more opportunities for student involvement. She points to the PTSA’s senior scholarships as a great example of how students can benefit from being active in the association, encouraging seniors to join and take advantage of the program.
Mrs. Yap goes on to say, “Students and parents can best get involved with the PTSA this year by becoming members. We have a link and we also have an Instagram account which is @anhsptsa and people can follow everything we do there. A majority of the things we do is cross-post what clubs are doing and what the athletic programs are doing.”
Mrs. Yap continues, “We also have association meetings with members and we also post that on our Instagram. We mention it in the Weekly Wolverine, which is an email that goes out every week. People can also come and find out from Dr. Mahendrakar and from Carrie Ross.”
Being a part of the PTSA is a great way to engage in the community and stay connected with what’s happening at Aliso Niguel.
