The new school year marks the beginning of a new water polo season and the boys are anticipating to win league, qualify for CIF and continue their winning streak tradition.
This year the boys water polo team is competing in the Sea View league.
In recent years, the boys have moved from division four to division one, continuously placed first in league and competed in the CIF playoffs in 2023.
For the 2024 season, Coach Jon Puffer says, “As always, our goal is to win league, push through CIF and improve each day as a team throughout the season.”
The 2024 boys water polo captains are Gabe Widarto (12), Cash Hooper (12) and Matt Lynch (11).
Widarto states, “Our practices consist of workouts in the weight room and practices in the afternoon.”
As the boys train for upcoming matches their number one goal is to become league champions and play in CIF.
Their first non-league game was played against Trabuco Hills High School on Aug. 20. The boys won 16-2.
Aliso went up against Yorba Linda High School on Aug. 22. The boys brought home the win that night with a score of 17-5.
The boys played Northwood High School on Sept. 3. The game was a close call for both teams. As the final seconds showed on the clock, Widarto scored the game-winning goal which resulted in a win for Aliso of 14-13.
Getting ready for the season, Aliso has also gone up against Laguna Beach High School and Portola High School.
So far, the boys have won three of their five games played; overall with a winning percentage of 60.
Although many of the team members graduated this past year, the boys water polo team is mentally and physically set for this year’s season with high hopes and goals.
