Health Occupants of America (HOSA) is an international organization for students recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Health Science Education. Last year, HOSA became a club here at Aliso Niguel.
“HOSA’s two fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare to all people,” says Club President Rotem Dvir (11).
The club allows students to gain education on different aspects of medicine while encouraging them to explore different medical careers so that they can utilize the information they have learned.
Members of the club participate in competitive HOSA events. These events allow students to be encouraged to look into subjects like Medical Terminology, Physiology, CPR, Sports Medicine, Biochemistry, EMT and many more.
The club meetings take place every other Friday in Mrs. Mo’s Wolverine +. Mrs. Mo is Aliso Niguel’s Sports Medical teacher.
During meetings, members discuss upcoming events that they can participate in. Additionally, they talk about fundraising opportunities so that they can afford to go to competition.
For example, at one of their recent meetings, members participated in an activity where they learned how to identify different types of bones in the human body. At the following meeting, they held a little competition in order to see which member could identify the bones the fastest.
According to hosa.org, “HOSA is not a club to which a few students in school join. Rather, HOSA is a powerful instructional tool that works best when it is integrated into the HSE and health science related curriculum and classroom.”
The students in this club are part of a bigger movement. This incredible organization helps students find their love for medical education and medical careers. These students can then explore careers for their futures, making a difference in the world’s lack of medical workers.
As president, Dvir has a lot of responsibilities and a wide range of duties that she performs.
Dvir says, “Before each meeting, I create slideshows and set the agenda for the meeting, deciding what it is we are going to be discussing and what we need to work on.”
On top of that, she also coordinates fun educational activities for her members to participate in and prepares her students for competition.
Currently, Dvir is trying to figure out the steps that they need to take to attend the two dat State Leadership Conference. At this conference, the students in the club will learn more about career opportunities, learn leadership skills, explore medical innovations and compete using the knowledge they have acquired throughout the year with the club.
This club here at Aliso Niguel allows students to bond over their love for the medical world. Members create amazing memories that will stick with them, even throughout their futures. These exceptional students are making a difference in the community by enhancing their passion for medicine.
