After coming off a long spring break with no practices, the Aliso boys tennis team prepares to face the San Juan Hills Stallions at Aliso.
The boys had spring break off, resulting in a nine day hiatus with some going on vacation and others practicing to preserve their skills.
Currently, the Aliso boys tennis team is led by Kyler Jeong (12) and Wesley Steinberg (12). The head coach for the team is Jeff Pinter.
Aliso has a current record of four wins to five losses. Two wins and losses at home and two wins and three losses away.
Aliso’s most recent match was against the Dana Hills Dolphins at their home court. Unfortunately, our boys lost to the Dolphins at a close score of ten to eight.
Currently, Aliso stands at fourth place in the South Coast league with a tied score against Dana. In the lead is Tesoro who has been undefeated in their past four games.
Aliso’s current record in the league is zero wins and one loss. Their first league game was against Dana Hills.
With only three more league opponents, Aliso hopes to regain momentum going into their finals. Their next matches are set against San Juan Hills, San Clemente, and Tesoro.
When asked about his opinions on the team Austin Ceiley (10) comments, “I feel like we’re doing alright so far, but with the long break in between I think all of us are fresh and ready to dominate our next league matches.”
In the years the team has been around they have only won the league once in 2017, but they hope to make it two this year. The high expectations from the girls tennis team who won League this year are what motivate the boys to do their best.
One of the varsity team captains, Wesley Steinberg (12), has low hopes for his last season at Aliso.
Wesley comments, “We could barely have a shot at winning. If we play our cards right and beat San Clemente and Tesoro we might have a chance at League. They’ve already beat us before so I’m not expecting much.”
Despite this, there was a change of luck for the Aliso Boys. They dominated in their match against San Juan Hills and came through with a win of twelve to six, tying their record to an even five to five.
This puts Aliso in a great position to come back for the title. They are now one to one in league with just two more games against San Clemente and Tesoro.
Although it may seem easy, it is quite the opposite. Both of their next opponents are currently the top two in their league, Tesoro leading San Clemente by double their wins.
Although it seems like Aliso has a slim chance of winning, the boys are determined.
Coach Pinter has high hopes for the boys and believes that if they play consistently then they will have a chance at winning league.
