On March 3, 2024, the Aliso Niguel High School’s Choral Music program performed their “Where in the World” concert at Mission Lutheran Church at 7 p.m.
The concept for the concert was music worldwide. During the concert, audience members attempted to guess where the song originated from while the choir students were singing it. This fun addition to the concert maintained audience engagement.
“My goal with this concert was to have my kids experience different languages and cultures in music and learn songs from different countries that give us new perspectives,” says the Choir Teacher at Aliso Niguel, Mr. Harney.
There were four different groups that performed along with some guest appearances from members of the Aliso Niguel Marching Band program.
The first group that sang were the Madrigals who sang a mix of songs from all around the world. The variety of languages and origins of the songs increased audience interest throughout the concert.
Next, the Concert Choir took the stage and performed songs from a variety of origins and cultures. The acapella group, The Treble Threats, were next to sing a combination of well known pop songs.
The Treble Threats is a completely student run acapella group. Chanel Simson (12) was inspired to create an acapella group with her fellow students in order to expand their music skills.
Chanel says, “A couple of friends and I, who were in choir, realized that we sounded good by ourselves and we wanted to try something new. At first we didn’t know what we were doing, but here we are two years later sounding great together and expanding our knowledge in different styles in music.”
After the acapella group performed songs from Taylor Swift, Keane and Billie Eilish, the Bella Cantore sang a wide variety of songs. The Bella Cantore is an all girls group that are able to harmonize perfectly with one another.
Finally, the groups came together to sing more songs, sharing the different cultures’ stories and perspectives on life.
Throughout the concert, there were many soloists who stole the audience’s attention. The soloists ranged from pianists, singers and other musicians.
To receive a solo, students need to be able to put in hard work, accept criticism from peers, be loud and confident and be open to try something new.
The students in the Choral Music program have been putting in months of hard work in order for them to perform and flourish together. Their next performance will take place on March 22 in the theater at Aliso Niguel High School.
