Every year at Aliso Niguel High School, the Associated Student Body (ASB) hosts an election for the new leader that will take the place of the previous president.
Traditionally, the president is a senior since they are the most responsible and act as role models for underclassmen.
Some of the primary duties of an ASB President includes acting as the official student body representative to the school and the community. They preside over all formal meetings, plan out the agenda for the school’s ASB and they must communicate with their peers to ensure that the ASB club actively betters the school.
The seniors that ran for the position for next year were Drake Smith (11), Faith Huebner (11) and Katherine Verrando (11).
To qualify to run for the job, a student must apply by filling out a packet that includes composing a speech that all students are able to read. It must includes one’s goal and aspirations they have towards the school and why they would make a great leader.
“I ran for ASB President because I genuinely care about the student’s voices being heard. The entire purpose of ASB is to serve our school community and student body to the best of our abilities. I wanted to lead that charge, being that voice for our students,” said Drake Smith.
A few weeks before the voting opens for students to choose who their future ASB President will be, the candidates advertise their campaign and have an opportunity to win student’s votes.
“I put posters all around the school advertising my slogan that people should have “faith” in Faith. I also posted on my social media about me running for the position so my fellow students knew about it” said Faith Huebner.
Drake Smith said, “My strategy and mindset while campaigning was to meet and learn the names of as many students as I could so I could be familiar with the faces that I would potentially be the leader of. I gave out some pencils and candy, but my primary ambition was to hear their concerns.”
Katherine Verrando said, “I put up posters and told many people around me about me running for ASB President. It was also seen on the Aliso Niguel instagram page, my speech and intentions of running for president.”
The voting opened on March 1 at 3:15 p.m. and closed on March 4 at 12 p.m. ASB uses the 5 star website that all students have access to with their emails and student ID numbers.
A few hours after voting was closed, the winner was announced on the Aliso Niguel High School Instagram page. Drake Smith won and will be the ASB President for the 2024-2025 school year.
Smith speaks on his win, saying, “I am very excited to be Aliso Niguel’s ASB president and I can not wait to take on this position with as much effort as I can provide.”
