Mr. Biggs is an english teacher at Aliso Niguel and has been educating young minds since 1993. His teaching career began with the realization that he wanted to be an educator in 11 grade because of his own exceptional english teachers. He has found teaching to be especially enjoyable and fulfilling.
Currently in his 31 year of his teaching career, Mr. Biggs has had a substantial impact on many students and athletes. Not only is he an english teacher, but also as a coach for multiple different sports including baseball, golf, football and basketball. His coaching career began at Crescenta Valley High School.
Mr. Biggs is a graduate of Cal State Northridge, he advanced further in his education with a masters degree in Comparative Literature from UC Irvine, highlighting how much he values the education and academic industry.
While he cares a lot about coaching Aliso’s golf team, he makes sure to prioritize his students and the responsibilities he has as a teacher and puts his students education first above all else. He has coached the girls golf team at Aliso since 2012 and has shown a significant amount of commitment to the nurturing of Aliso’s golf team.
When reflecting on his coaching career, Mr. Biggs shares that his biggest achievement as a coach was winning CIF as an assistant coach for another school’s baseball team. The team played at Dodger Stadium where he got to be the bullpen catcher, which serves as a very fond memory of his.
In the classroom, Mr. Biggs enjoys sharing his love for literature with all of his students which has become one of his favorite parts about teaching as he gets to watch his students enjoy and connect with the material.
Expanding on what he finds most fulfilling as a teacher, he shares that, “Introducing kids to various poems and novels that I love and seeing them enjoy it is probably what I find the most fulfilling.”
In terms of his teaching methods, Mr. Biggs shared that he believes that the most effective way to teach is by encouraging students to take responsibility for their work and their engagement in their own education, while also learning to connect with their peers.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Biggs expressed his interest in reading, golfing and traveling.
In addition to teaching and coaching, Mr Biggs is a PLC coach and helps to provide positive development with fellow teachers in order to beneficially shape future learning at Aliso. He has done so for the past three years and continues to work with his colleagues to improve education.
When asked what he would say to aspiring teachers, Mr. Biggs provided meaningful advice saying, “Don’t take it personally when the kids don’t show much interest because they sometimes don’t fully understand how important their education is yet, but hopefully, with your help, one day they will.”
Mr. Biggs continues to inspire and educate his students and his players in the classroom and on the field. His dedication to teaching and coaching is truly admirable and inspiring to those around him.
