Talented Dancer, Dana Smith (12), is a captain of the Aliso Niguel Dance team this year. Showcasing her talent, Smith uses her agility and flexibility to truly drive her success.
Smith has shown an extreme amount of commitment to dance. Starting when she was four, dance has been a significant part in her life for a very long period of time. Smith was encouraged by her mom to try dancing. Smith instantaneously formed a connection with the sport. This year marks Smith’s fourth consecutive year being on Aliso’s Dance team and she emphasized how much she truly enjoys it.
Elaborating on what sparked her passion, Smith said “I just instantly fell in love. It was so much fun and it really helped me to come out of my shell because I was very shy when I was younger.”
During her junior year, Smith was the co-captain of the team. This year, Smith has advanced and has attained the position of team captain.
As a team captain, Smith says her responsibilities include maintaining organization with upcoming events and competitions, as well as ensuring the team is able to use clear communication to perform to the best of their abilities. Smith is very proud of the team’s accomplishments and believes that the team’s collective efforts have created a sense of unity.
Aliso Niguel Dancers Madelyn Pelle and Samatha Smith shared their admiration for their teammate and friend, Dana.
Pelle (12) says, “Dana is very motivational and talented but humble. It’s really easy to work with her because she answers all your questions and guides you through all of the routines.”
Smith (12) adds, “Dana is an incredible dancer and she makes everyone feel like they are great too. She is a great captain and is good at helping us learn.”
Smith exemplifies that she values the importance of leading by example. The Dance team does not have a varsity or JV team, meaning that the team ranges from freshman to seniors. She believes that as a team captain, she can lead her younger peers by example and push them to be their best. Her consideration for the underclassmen highlights Smith’s ability to use her leadership skills for the team.
Devoting a significant amount of time to dance comes with challenges. Smith provides insight that it takes good time management and ambition to balance the effort that she puts into her school work and into dance.
When asked what her favorite part about being on the team is, Smith says “My favorite part is spending time with all the friends and the coaches, making unforgettable memories.”
Smith’s remarkable talent on stage has earned her a widespread amount of admiration and recognition. Recently, she placed first in the Sharp International competition for her captivating routine in the contemporary solo category. Further solidifying her exceptional abilities in the performing arts.
Smith is grateful for her experiences and the memories she has made with the team.
She hopes to attend a University of California school and stay in-state following graduation, aspiring to keep her passion for dance by joining a college team and pursuing a career in the dance industry.
