Oak Grove Elementary School won the Teal Town tournament and the title of the best feeder school for Aliso Niguel High School after competing in a relay race and a basketball game against five other schools.
The Teal Town tournament was part of the Community Night event, organized by ASB of Aliso Niguel High School, to recognize and connect with the elementary schools that feed into it.
The event aimed to show the younger students the experience of being part of a high school community and to unite them through an event of friendly competition.
The participating schools were Bergeson, Canyon Vista, Don Juan Avila, Moulton, Oak Grove and Wood Canyon. They competed in a relay race during the boys basketball game halftime on Jan. 31, and a basketball game during the girls basketball game halftime on Feb. 1.
The elementary school students lined up at the opposite end of the basketball court, in rows of five, and dribbled a basketball to the other end, where they tried to shoot a basket. The school with the fastest time and the most baskets won the race.
Oak Grove Elementary School, led by Principal Robles, emerged as the winner of the relay race, beating the other schools by a large margin. They also had the most students and staff attend the football community night in the fall and the basketball community night in the winter.
Mrs. Ross says, “I’m so proud of our students and staff for making the community night event a success. It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and spirit of our elementary schools and how they interacted with our high school community. I think this event is a great way to build relationships and foster a sense of belonging among our future Wolverines.”
Principal Hatcher, Mrs. Ross and some ASB students visited Oak Grove Elementary School to congratulate them and present them with a trophy and a banner that declared them the best feeder school.
Caleb Ulrich (12), the ASB member managing the event, said that he was proud of the event and the turnout, “Yeah, to me community night simply provides a fun night for the kids who participate and the parents who come to see a good game of basketball and their kids as well. School events can’t get much better than an event that provides fun and I believe that I did my best to run an event that delivered,” he said.
