Juniors at Aliso Niguel High School recently took the Seal of Biliteracy test, showcasing their proficiency in a language other than English. The test measures a student’s ability to read, write, speak, and understand a language at a high level.
Three students, Maya Jackson (11), Katie Rolls (11) and Priya Harrington (11), shared their experiences and how they prepared for the exam.
Maya Jackson claimed, “I began my preparations by looking at practice tests on the Avant website and reviewing old vocabulary.”
She found the most challenging part of the exam was making sure to answer every part of the question correctly and ensuring her grammar was up to par. However, with ample preparation and practice, Maya felt confident in her abilities.
Katie Rolls utilized practice questions and conversed with her sister in Spanish. She also went over Quizlet vocabulary and verb tenses. Katie found that the most challenging part of the exam was having enough content to talk about.
Rolls stated, “To overcome this hurdle, I learned to stop and think, reevaluate the question, and come up with more material to discuss.”
Priya Harrington (11), practiced speaking spanish with others and even received tutoring. She also used flashcards and Quizlets’ to learn vocabulary and verb tenses and worked on her accent.
She claimed, “During the exam, I struggled with the three minute speaking limit, but I tried not to stutter and made every effort to sound fluent. I imagined that I was speaking to someone else, which helped me maintain my composure.”
The Seal of Biliteracy Test is an important exam that showcases a student’s proficiency in a language other than English. It is a valuable asset for college applications and future employment opportunities.
Students that have worked hard to prepare for this test, have seen their efforts paid off. They have showcased their proficiency in Spanish or any other language and can now add the Seal of Biliteracy to their accomplishments.
By utilizing resources like practice questions, flashcards and conversing with others in the language, students can overcome the challenges of the test and achieve success.
