On Feb. 14, 2024, Marvel’s new “Madame Web” movie was released exclusively in movie theaters. The movie was a continuation of “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.”
The film was directed by S. J. Clarkson, and it starred Dakota Jackson as Madame Web. The budget was 80 million USD and it seems to have been one of Marvel’s biggest mistakes to produce.
“Madame Web” is based on a Marvel comic based on a paramedic by the name Cassandra Webb as she discovers her past and develops powers. The character Madame Web was first introduced in 1980s and was finally adapted into a film,
The movie begins with Cassandra Webb living her daily life at work as a paramedic alongside her co-worker, Ben Parker, who is played by Adam Scott. As they carry on in their work, the movie presents three teenage girls by the names of Julia Carpenter, Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin.
Julia Carpenter is played by Sydney Sweeney, Anya Corazon is played by Isabela Merced and Mattie Franklin is played by Celeste O’Connor. It is quickly revealed that these young girls became targets of the antagonist due to the powers they will get when they are older.
Abby Lee (10) shares, “I really wanted to watch this movie when I found out Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Jackson were going to be a part of it! I like their characters in the movie and I thought they played their roles pretty well.”
Once Cassandra undergoes a near death experience, as shown in the trailer, this initiates her powerful sixth sense to see the future. Throughout the beginning of the movie, Cassandra struggles in understanding her power and struggles to cope with the new changes.
The start of the movie was generally slow and nothing intriguing happened until Cassandra finally meets the three teenage girls through her future vision. The protagonists are then continuously chased by the antagonist, Ezekiel, who is played by Tahar Rahim.
Sienna Lassegard (10) says, “ I honestly wasn’t a big fan of the whole movie and I was disappointed there wasn’t even a credit scene.”
Based on the character Ezekial from the original comics, the actor did not portray the character as intensely as the character was supposed to be. Many viewers also disliked how slow paced the start of the movie was at the beginning.
The start of the movie also showed the three teenage girls with their hero uniforms attacking the antagonist, yet this made the movie a bit confusing because the girls are unaware of their powers when Cassandra meets them. By the end of the movie, the girls are shown in their uniforms with their powers again, but it was never revealed how they gained their powers to begin with. On top of that, the script of the movie was also at times corny or uninteresting which made the movie less exciting.
Looking on the bright side, the movie had good CGI effects during the climatic parts and it made the movie very intriguing during those scenes. There were many moments in the movie that were heartfelt and sentimental that made the movie more enjoyable to watch.
