Recently, at Aliso Niguel High School, there has been a new program implemented called the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The program is designed to help the students’ behavioral problems as well as their teachers that have to deal with misbehaving students. The program aims to create a culture of respect, responsibility and safety among students.
PBIS focuses on recognizing and encouraging positive behaviors which allows students to succeed academically and socially. The PBIS program works to prevent misbehavior and has early intervention to address behavioral concerns before they become worse.
Mr. Mocnik seconds the statement by saying, “PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports which aims to help misbehaving students.”
Some students also have opinions on the PBIS and wonder if it’s even a good system to deal with the problem of troubled students. Under this program, the students and staff have clear responsibilities and expectations for behavior at school. The PBIS program also helps offer targeted interventions for the students who need it.
Maria Mishriky (10) states, “While I do believe that there are many solutions for misbehaving kids, I think that the most influential factor around kids is their parents and while this system might work for some kids, I believe that it might not work if parents teach the children different behavioral habits.”
There is concern about whether the program is the right thing to deal with misbehavior, even having complaints from certain teachers and people in general. They are worried that the misbehaving students get rewarded more for their misbehavior and that the system is not working properly. This leads to stigmatizing the students and allowing for troubling behaviors. Some even worry that the program disproportionately benefits students who already are well-behaved.
Despite these complaints and concerns, the high school is doing its best to tackle the problems at hand and help create a sustainable and positive environment for all students even if they are causing problems. The program helps focus on proactive strategies and also tries to encourage positive behavior, helping to empower students to make right decisions and makea safer and more inclusive environment.
ANHS adding the PBIS program helps to take care of issues faced with troubled students and helps to contribute and control the situations that arise when teachers have to deal with the misbehaving students. The program supports a major goal of achieving an inclusive environment and educational experience for all students.
