Ending 2023, the movie “Anyone but You” is released, casting well-known movie stars Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell. The movie is based on main characters Bea and Ben who fake their “perfect couple” appearance to maintain their images. Despite mixed reviews revolving around the movie, it was popular enough to get the song “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield trending in social media.
Despite its age, the 1999 romantic comedy film “10 Things I Hate About You” still remains a popular movie today. Cameron James, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is crushing on Bianca Stratford, played by Larisa Oleynik, who cannot date until her older sister Kat Stratford, played by Julia Stiles, dates, so Cameron decides to bribe Patrick Verona, played by Heath Ledger, to attract Kat. The movie has won two awards and has gotten 13 nominations, overall winning the hearts of many romantic movie enthusiasts.
Many classic romantic movies stay classic romantic movies throughout the years, such as “The Notebook” that features actor Ryan Gosling as Noah Calhoun and actress Rachel McAdams as Allie Hamilton. In the movie, an elderly man recalls a romance story to an elderly woman with dementia about Noah and Allie facing hardships in their romance due to their differences in social class. “The Notebook” is a must-watch movie that has caused many watchers to shed tears of happiness and sadness.
Even though the film regained popularity due to social media, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” remains one of the best romantic comedies known. Kate Hudson plays as Andie Anderson, who is curious to write about losing a guy in ten days, and Matthew McCaughley plays as Benjamin Barry, who is Andie’s victim and bets he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days to win a big campaign. Kate and Ben’s chemistry has gotten fans flattered and excitedly squealing as they listen to “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon.
The 2018 film “Crazy Rich Asians” portrays a representation of Asian culture through a romantic comedy film. Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, is from New York and travels to Singapore to visit her wealthy boyfriend, Nick Young, played by Henry Golding, to meet his family. Many Asian Americans worldwide resonate with the movie, facing familial values in Asian culture.
Just as light-hearted romance movies have left a lasting impression on many, so have bittersweet romance movies, including “La La Land.” Pianist Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, and aspiring actress Mia, played by Emma Stone, are driven together due to their common interest of following what they love. The movie is best known for its beautiful cinematography and music with a side of Sebastian and Mia’s undeniable chemistry.
Christine Lam (11) speaks about “La La Land” and says, “I think Mia was in the wrong the whole movie and is a terrible person. In my opinion, Sebastian deserved better.”
Many people have been brought together through their common interest in romance movies. Despite its cheesiness, romance movies not only shape many current relationships but also individuals today.
