Valentine’s Day is a special day of the year meant for people to express their love for those they care about in their lives.
Going back to the third century in Rome, there was an execution of the beloved priest, Valentines, known as St. Valentine. In mourning and remembrance of this priest, millions across the globe would send heart-shaped cards and chocolate on the anniversary of his execution, Feb. 14. Centuries later, the day has been modernized to commemorate love and is known as we call it, Valentine’s Day.
As time has moved on, this holiday has moved from a mourning holiday to a romantic holiday and now a day where you can celebrate every aspect of love, romantic or not.
Mrs. Jax, a geometry teacher here at Aliso Niguel shares, “My favorite part of Valentine’s Day is being able to celebrate love.”
This day is celebrated in numerous ways, but some of the most creative ways can be remembered as the most sentimental. Having some alone time with the ones you love is the best way to celebrate this holiday, so here are some activities that can help you have the perfect Valentine’s Day.
The classic movie and dinner are some of the most iconic activities for a night like this. Being able to eat delicious food and watch a movie is always a wise choice. In this case, you can talk throughout the dinner and then go watch the movie and be able to discuss that as well. This opens up many conversation starters and ensures a memorable night out.
Sometimes less is more, and in this next activity date, the theory applies. Arts and crafts or any D.I.Y activity are both fun ways to spend your Valentine’s Day. Making self-portraits of one another or painting little hearts on cups is a cost-effective and sentimental Valentine’s activity and lets you go home with a souvenir.
Although Valentine’s Day is stereotyped as a “romantic day,” it extends further to a day in which love is celebrated platonically.
Kirsten Martinez (12) says, “My favorite thing about Valentine’s Day is being able to show the people I love actually how much I love them.”
Even if Valentine’s Day is in the winter, California weather permits outdoor activities for this holiday. Picnics at the beach while watching the sunset allow couples to bundle up in warm clothes and watch the sunset while eating some of their favorite snacks and meals.
Heart-shaped treats are some of the most memorable snacks for this holiday, so why not bake them yourselves? You and your partner, or friends, can get together and spend time together while making heart-shaped cookies, brownies and even cakes. This allows you to bond over treats and spend time with the ones that you care about.
The most iconic Valentine’s Day activity that is ensured to not go wrong is simply gift-giving. This day is supposed to spread love and there is no greater way than showing the person you love how much they mean to you with a gift. Hand-made or store-bought, meaningful gifts go a long way. From a favorite band tee-shirt or something that they mentioned they wanted once makes anyone feel special and loved.
