For the first time at Aliso Niguel, students will be given student emails which they can use to communicate with teachers and other students. The new system is being set up by the school’s administration and is scheduled to be released later this school year.
The new email will be bringing more communication for Aliso students who have been unable to reach their teachers and fellow classmates around the campus. Although they have been able to send emails before through Canvas, they are no longer restricted to communication between people with shared classes.
Ms. Schrader, the assistant principal of Aliso Niguel stated, “It’s for colleges and will offer students the ability to use their own school emails for applications.”
The decision for student emails comes from the Capistrano Unified School District school board and will make it easier for students to communicate with their teachers. The change will also bring more ease for students to use their school emails for a variety of school-accepted websites.
Cade Jackson (12) said, “I am glad that we can start using our emails for more things because I am always running into problems with my school email not being accepted for multiple things. Also, when we have to use our personal emails, sometimes the wifi is too bad at the school to actually allow you to access your personal email on your phone so it stops you from actually doing what you need to do.”
Other changes that have occurred to technology at Aliso is addition of the Connect extension that was recently added to the chromebooks. This extension allows teachers to monitor students’ browsing activity and prevent cheating during tests.
Many students haven’t noticed the new extension, but slowly they are coming to accept it as a part of their chromebook.
The new student emails will also be monitored by teachers and school personnel to prevent any explicit or illegal activity from occurring. The administration hopes that the emails will serve primarily academic purposes and only serve to further students’ ability to achieve academic help.
The administration hopes that students will be able to use the new emails to further their own goals and be able to reach out to teachers more efficiently. They believe a massive hurdle for students is the inability to contact their teachers in a timely manner and hope that with the addition of these new emails, student and teacher interactions will become more common.
Future goals for Administration are not yet planned as changes at Aliso Niguel and other Capistrano Unified schools are primarily based on observations of student behavior. But the school board hopes to provide a safe online learning environment for all students along with the ability to better interact with their learning environments.
