The Aliso Niguel girls soccer program hosted a poker night fundraiser on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Kite Hill Recreation Center in Laguna Niguel. Maxon Duncan, a Councilman for the Aliso Viejo City Council, along with many other Aliso girls soccer volunteers, planned and coordinated the event.
At the gathering, there were around 60 parents and coaches who attended. In the recreation center, there were nine to 10 tables of cards. To enter, there was a $100 buy-in to play with free drinks and food provided.
The evening started off strong with accommodated drinks and food from El Ranchito. There was grilled al pastor, chicken al pastor, rice, refried beans and chips and salsa that many people enjoyed and loved.
The ASG volunteers even put on the NFL playoff game due to high requests from parents and created easy poker strategy templates for people who were new to playing poker. The environment was friendly with people talking and laughing as the music played, providing everyone with a good time.
A father who attended the event said, “I had a fun time. This gave me the opportunity to meet and talk with the other soccer parents and coaches.”
Surprisingly, it was not a very competitive night because all of the parents and coaches showed in support of their daughters and players.
Another father that participated said, “I played about 40 rounds before I decided to go all in and lost to a pair of queens.”
As the night came to an end and the tables got smaller, the winner was Mike Munzing, the Mayor of Aliso Viejo.
Maxon Duncan, the event coordinator said, “Prizes included three gift baskets donated by ASG booster members. The winning basket included a stadium seat, a Mr. Buddy heater, propane tanks and a $75 gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods.”
Some other prizes for close winners included gift cards from local businesses and other donations from parents.
From the astonishing participation from everyone, the Aliso girls soccer program raised approximately $5500. The new head coach Marco Spaccini of the girls soccer team hopes to use this money to build an even stronger program for everyone. He has many ideas and plans for the future that are going to help players improve on and off the field.
This was a great idea for the Aliso girls soccer team that will be remembered. All of the parents, coaches, volunteers and more that organized and helped out in this fundraiser are all very much appreciated for their contributions.
