There were many significant trends that happened throughout 2023 that played major roles in the way people appear, talk and act. Platforms, such as social media, have implemented new trends that many people enjoy participating in.
During the month of July, Warner Bros. premiered and released their comedy and fantasy movie, Barbie. The recurring and popularized color of pink throughout the movie encouraged the viewers to partake in a trend called Barbiecore.
Barbiecore was a trend where people would accessorize themselves based on the pink fashion used by Barbie. Many people also hosted many Barbie themed parties or events as a result of the prominent attention the movie received from all around the world.
Adidas have become a popular fashion staple throughout the entire year. A special feature that has made it to thousands of people’s closets is sambas. Thanks to the collaborations and promotions Adidas received with this shoe, many people were inspired to buy it for themselves.
Ariel Christensen (11), says, “I think because the shoes are so comfortable and stylish more people are starting to wear them. I’m glad these shoes are getting more popular because they look good on everyone who wears them.”
“Girl Dinner” is a trend starting from Tiktoker Olivia Maher where she showcased her meal made up of random household snacks accompanied by wine as a girl dinner. After discovering this video, many other girls related to this communal tendency of eating the weirdest and radomest meals in their house that they also wanted to share with the internet what they consider as “girl dinner.”
Fortnite has always been a popular and amusing video game to play since it reached its peak in 2018. Fortnite constantly changes its map with the continuous new seasons, but once gamers saw that Fortnite was bringing back their original map in November, thousands of people were thrilled to play again.
From the well-known fast food restaurant McDonald’s, the Grimace shake trend originated from a Tiktoker by the name Austin Frazier. His tiktok showed a short clip of him featuring the new addition to the McDonald’s menu: the Grimace shake. The shake was meant as a celebration for the 52nd birthday of one of McDonald’s infamous characters named Grimace.
Once Frazier’s video went viral, many people decided to participate in this trend by buying the grimace shake from Mcdonald’s, record themselves drinking it, and then shortly after show themselves falling or faking their death from the shake.
Skincare lines experienced a huge increase in interest this year from their promotions and viral products surfacing the internet. Products from companies such as Glow Recipe and Drunk Elephants went viral as many influencers showed their routines using their products and persuaded others to match their favorite influencers.
Abigail Lee (10), states, “I saw a lot of people starting to use Glow Recipe products so I wanted to give it a try! Once I started using the dewdrops, I noticed really good improvement in my skin.”
The Roman Empire trend started to become popular in August of 2023 when an influencer, Saskia Cort, asked her viewers how often they thought about the Roman Empire. As people asked each other this question, there was a general consensus that men thought about the Roman Empire much more than women.
This inspired women to begin making remarks to significant or important things they saw in their life which they constantly think about as their “Roman Empire.” A woman’s “Roman Empire” could range from the most comedic event in their life to the most serious which they enjoy sharing on social media. This trend has also carried outside of social media where some people also compare things in their lives using this terminology.
2023 was also a period where regional Mexican music took to the top of the charts. Artists like Bad Bunny, Peso Pluma and Karol G experienced one of the best growing years for themselves. This has inspired other artists to want to collaborate with them and create new charting music.
“South Park” is a show that has been airing since the 90s, but this year, it experienced a whole new wave of viewers when comedic clips from the show kept spreading through social media platforms. South Park attracts multiple audiences from around the world which is why many people enjoyed watching and talking about the show in 2023.
Bows are another fashion trend that began with coquette fashion being more popularized in 2023. Its feminine and soft aesthetic was admired by all sorts of women which led to them tying ribbons in their hair as the top fashion accessory trend of the year.
Trends are constantly being made and changed as time passes. As 2024 begins, it is amusing to see how society is impacted by what we consume online.
