Now that students are entering the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year, Aliso Niguel is facing difficulties with countless amounts of schedule changes.
Schedule changes at the beginning of a semester are very common due to sports, new semester classes and course drops. Unfortunately, the students this semester have also seen various involuntary schedule changes.
Due to dissolving classes and the start of spring sports, many students are having their schedule changed. To make room in classes that students need to enter, other students’ schedules are involuntarily being changed in order to accommodate for the other alterations. Some students who’ve experienced these involuntary changes are irritated with the counseling staff about this matter.
“My schedule got changed this semester and now, I don’t have as many classes with my friends. It was irritating at first, but I also understand why it was necessary to do so to accommodate other students,” says Paige Bergman (11).
Although this is irritating, most students are aware of the issues the counselors are having and they understand why they needed to have a new schedule this semester.
Along with the start of spring sports, students’ schedules have been changed because teachers that coach spring sports need a free period. Additionally, when classes get too small, they must combine the classes for efficiency of learning and to lower the stress on the teachers.
Although it seems like there have been a lot of schedule changes this semester, counselor Mrs. Whiteside says that there are far more students with schedule changes and issues in the first semester compared to second.
Mrs. Whiteside states, “When it has been a whole summer, students have not thought about the schedule they made in the spring, and they don’t take the time to talk to the counselors during the walk through which takes place before the school year begins.”
This causes tons of students to flood into the guidance office to speak with their counselor during the first few weeks of school during the second semester. Although there are a lot of students that have voluntarily and involuntarily had their schedule changed this semester, there are always reasons why they are changed that students do not think about.
Regardless, Aliso Niguel gives students the opportunity to access our several outstanding guidance counselors on campus at all times. They are ready to assist students with their needs and schedule changes throughout the year, providing a helping hand to all students on campus when necessary.
