Talan Chauncey is the 2023-2024 Varsity Captain of the boys soccer team this year. Using his height to head fifty-fifty balls and using strength to shrug off defenders in the midfield are qualities that Talan brings to the team.
Some of the most character-defining attributes that Talan possesses as a leader are his enthusiasm, experience, smartness, and accountability. Many other players, such as Gunnar Wade (11), look up to him as a role model for the team.
“I think that he is a great captain for the team. Talan always sticks up for his teammates during games in times of need and gives motivation to the rest of the team. His energy and passion for the game is unmatched.”
Chauncey has been a member of the Aliso Niguel soccer program for all four years of his high school career, along with being a member of the school’s varsity team for three years.
At the age of three, Talan first kicked a soccer ball. From then on, his passion for the game has carried him to this moment.
Chauncey says, “I love the game so much because it’s a nonstop, never-ending game that always pushes my physical and mental limits. I also love the game because of the competitiveness it brings out of me as well as the friendships and relationships I have made with people through the sport.”
Chauncey was a crucial part of Aliso’s game against San Clemente, where he converted a penalty to put the Wolverines 1-0 up at the start of the game.
It was clear what difference he made to the game when he picked up an injury and had to be subbed out, in which San Clemente found a gap in Aliso’s midfield and capitalized, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for the Wolverines.
Talan is also a multi-sport athlete, not only competing on the pitch but in the ocean as well.
Chauncey captains the school’s Surf team, led by Coach Werner and Mosier, and has also been a part of the surf program at the varsity level for four years.
This past year, Chauncey made the finals at league finals placing sixth. During his sophomore year, Chauncey was also named MVP of the team.
Not only is Talan excelling on the field and in the waves, but he is also performing in the classroom. Last year, Chauncey was named a scholar athlete for both semesters as well as getting student of the year in his math class.
After high school, Talan hopes to further extend his soccer career while also pursuing a degree in professional flight and technology in hopes of being a pilot. Talan’s dream school is Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Talan also enjoys helping out the community. He volunteers at a charity called Miracles for Kids. This program aims to help out and teach kids who are less fortunate with special needs how to surf.
In all, Talan Chauncey deserves this issue’s Wolverine Spotlight as he positively impacts our school’s community.
