The year 2023 was filled with new films, and students from Aliso Niguel High School have seen a number of them and picked the top 10 from the year.
The Barbie movie is now becoming one of the most notable movies ever. It has made 1.4 billion dollars and recently earned the first-ever Golden Globe award for cinematic and box office achievement. It single-handedly also revived the color hot pink and started new fashion trends within the fashion industry.
“I remember dressing up in pink when my friends and I went to watch the movie, and so did a lot of other people,” said Nola Le Tran (12).
Like the Barbie movie, the Oppenheimer movie made around 953.8 million dollars and still won awards. One of the most recent was the Critics Choice Awards in early Jan. 2024. This historic film taught history through modern film and claimed to be a cinematic masterpiece by many through its storytelling and visualization.
Although it only aired in a few theaters, Poor Things collected a gross box office of 13 million dollars. It won Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards as a British film. A movie about liberation and equality secures a spot as one of the best movies of 2023.
As a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from 2018, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the most anticipated movies in 2023. Dedicated fans flocked to the theaters in their Spider-Man costumes, allowing the movie to earn over 690 million dollars worldwide. The unique style of the animated film won the Best Animated Feature award and revolutionized animation styles.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a family-friendly movie that captures the hearts of many original Mario fans. Adapted from the famous and classic Mario franchise, the film grossed 1.36 billion dollars worldwide.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie quickly became a favorite of many as it adapts from the Five Nights at Freddy’s horror franchise. It received over 290 million dollars at the box office, becoming Blumhouse’s highest-grossing movie. Many fans flocked to theaters to relive a childhood favorite in movie form.
With the success of the first and second movies, Trolls 3 has achieved new heights in the series. Overall, Trolls 3 has made 204.3 million dollars while winning Best Soundtrack awards. The movie album has performed tens of millions of listens on Spotify alone and has taken the internet by storm.
Cocaine Bear, one of the most notable horror comedy movies of 2023, earned a total box office of nearly 90 million dollars. The movie received nominations for The Comedy Movie of the Year and Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Live-Action Production.
The Hunger Games: Although the Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes came out at the end of 2023, it received a current box office of over 300 million dollars worldwide. The prequel of the whole Hunger Games movie series received positive reviews and nominations for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film, The Action Movie of the Year, and many more.
Lastly, Past Lives, a Korean film about the reunion, captured the hearts of many and received positive criticism. Its box office was over 22 million dollars. Its success earned it five nominations at the 81st Golden Globe Awards and won Best Picture from the National Society of Film Critics.
2023 has brought many great films to audiences. They were not limited to the ten listed, and many anticipate more movies coming out in 2024.
