Hope for Habitats, a student run club at Aliso Niguel High School, helps restore coastal habitats at Huntington Beach. By partnering with OC Habitats, members of the club assist with removing harmful plants that are interfering with the health of the habitats on the coast.
President Lily Schieber (12) established this club at the beginning of this school year. She was interested in what she and other students could do to help the animals within our local habitats. This club offers its members many amazing opportunities with countless club meetings, numerous activities and easy volunteer hours.
Every third Thursday of the month, Lily’s club gets together with OC Habitats and helps them revive the habitats along the beaches in Huntington. With OC Habitats, the students get to learn about the stability of natural environments and the actions they can take in order to assist in raising awareness for the health standards of these environments.
When asked what they do at their club meetings, Lily replies, “We talk about when our next volunteer event is scheduled and resolve any questions people have about getting to the location, what to do and how to sign up.”
On Dec. 6, the club held their last meeting before winter break. At the meeting, Lily and the other members discussed the actions they were going to take before the spring semester. It was determined that there will be no volunteering activity during the break, but all the members will be getting together to go on a tide pool hike in Treasure Island.
Although there will be no volunteering opportunities over winter break, there will be more opportunities coming in the new year.
“I love being a part of this club because you are able to help the environment directly and consistently. Since we volunteer consistently with the same organization, we get to observe the physical change that we are actually making in the coastal environments,” says Vice President Eunnie Wu (12).
To join this outstanding student run club, message Lily through the club’s Instagram @anhs.hopeforhabitats. Along with that, find this club at the next club rush during second semester.
