Students at Aliso dress up during Red Ribbon week to show their support and spread awareness on the importance of being drug free. Each day of the week there are different themes that students dress up get involved in the cause.
On Monday, Oct. 23, students were encouraged to dress up in red clothing to spread awareness on the dangers that occur due to the harmful effects of illegal drug use. Americans all around the nation to help increase awareness and knowledge on the harmful effects of drug abuse by wearing red. At Aliso, students demonstrate dedication to the cause by wearing red and by decorating the school in red ribbons and posters to express our school’s promotion of the annual celebration.
On Tuesday Oct. 24, the theme was wear neon to show that students are too bright for drugs. Students wore their neon shirts and bright colors to express that avoiding drug use is the smartest thing when considering the long term effects that drugs can have on your mind and body.
Wednesday Oct. 25, was wear Hawaiian shirts or tropical clothing to show the students’ support of laying off drugs. Thousands of people die every year due to drug overdose and health related issues caused by the consumption of illegal substances. Hence the theme of laying off drugs to ensure that everyone lives a long life.
On Thursday Oct. 26, the theme was wear cozy PJs to school to display students’ dream to live a healthy life without drugs. Drug misuse can lead to toxic effects on the brain, and substance abuse can change the way that the brain is structured and functions by altering its balance of chemicals. This can cause changes in behavior, and can result in tension, anxiety and depression.
Friday Oct. 27, the dress up day was to wear a jersey to school. Students wore their favorite jerseys, or sports related clothing, to show that they are teaming up against drug use. Drug use is extremely damaging to the body and causes lifelong physical disabilities to the body. The misuse of drugs can lead to impaired coordination, heart, and lung disease and cancer. These physical effects are not worth the risk.
Students at Aliso strive to meet the goal of showing their school spirit by participating in these dress up days. The number of students that dressed up for certain dress up days varied throughout the week. Some days students were more successful at showing spirit than others.
ASB advisor Ms. Ross says that, “I think it just depends on the day. Wearing red and wearing PJs is pretty easy, so I think that the easier the dress up day, the more kids get involved.”
ASB students plan on taking this feedback and using it to make dress up days easier for students to participate in so more students will dress up in the future. Ross comments that “the feedback we get from how successful our spirit weeks are definitely help us to make it better in the future.”
